I have a laptop with a 60GB 7200RPM SATA hard drive, but would prefer more space. Would it be a fairly even trade for a 120GB 5400?

depends on the age too. check prices, if theyre anywhere near each other then yes. if the 120GB is worth more then you are probably getting a better deal. The performance drop will also not be too bad.
