So my HP DV6200 laptop crashed and the motherboard is to blame...the quote was almost 500 dollars to fix which is why I think just getting a new toshiba would be better than getting the old HP fixed.

Is it possible to get files from my hard drive in the dead HP to a new laptop? (Nothing was backed up)

Obviously I know nothing about computers, so any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Yes, all you need is a 2.5" USB enclosure for SATA hard disks. After connecting your HDD to the enclosure, you can access it as a portable external USB drive from any computer.

Something like that will work fine. I have one of these combo adapters and it's handy as hell. As an added bonus, you can usually run PATA notebook drives without AC too :)
