The motherboard finally went on my Dell Latitude E6400 back in July, so I finally had to force myself to replace it. It had served me flawlessly since I bought it from the Dell Outlet (NEW) in November 2008 (4-years and 8-months). It also survived a run-in with my passenger side airbag and an 9-foot drop onto a concrete floor with only minor cosmetic damage during that time. So it's fair to say that I'm a HUGE fan of the E6400 and of most Latitude models in general. I replaced mine with a Latitude 6430u (Ultrabook) and I'll be very pleased if I get anywhere close to the same length of service from it!![]()
About six months prior to retiring my E6400, I got a great deal on a 128GB Samsung 830-Series SSD. One of the few things I didn't like about the E6400 was the noisy (and toasty) Seagate Hard Drive and, after four years, I finally replaced it! The Samsung SSD made a huge difference in boot times, program launch times and general system responsiveness....it felt like new laptop.
Last week, I bought my mom an Off-Lease E6400 with a 1-year Warranty for $229! It only had 2GB RAM, a DVD-ROM optical drive, 80GB 7200rpm (Seagate) HD and 6-cell Battery. But five minutes out of the box it had 4GB RAM, a DVD-RW drive and 9-cell Battery from my old one. The only thing left to do is install the 128GB Samsung SSD....
In the past, I have lucked out when moving a hard drive between near-identical systems. They have often booted in the new system, only requiring minor tweaks (if any) after successfully booting.
In this case, both E6400's have the same BIOS version, same chipset/graphics, same wireless and Bluetooth cards and same operating system (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit). The only difference at all is that mine had the 2.4GHz C2D P8600 processor and the one I bought for my mom had the 2.53GHz C2D P8700.
I would LOVE to be able to swap out the current 80GB hard drive for the SSD and the new system boot right up....but I know there are some things I need to modify in System Setup first to switch from a conventional HDD to the SSD. I'm just not sure what those are.....and even if I alter those settings, will I be lucky enough for it to work so easily?
If it doesn't work, I'll probably just do a Clean Install of WIndows 7. But, of course, I want to take to the easy way out....

Just swap the drive, it will recognize the new CPU and should "install it" and then ask for a reboot. I would check up on the status of the Windows activation to, might require a new activation, but you have a COA sticker on the laptop, so no worries there.
Oh and make sure the BIOS is set to the same mode as the one of the previous Latitude, IDE or AHCI.
Transferring Smsung 830 SSD from my my old Dell Latitude E6400 into an almost idetnical E6400- easiest way?
