I have a Compaq Presario CQ50 that I need a little help with. On startup the screen stays black, nothing at all, though the leds around the case (power, wifi, etc) all light up and I can hear the drive spinning. I've done a bit of research this morning and have tried the following. I did a hard reset, connected to an external monitor (nothing), I removed the RAM and hard drive per various tutorials, all with no result. The graphics card is integrated and what I've found seems to indicate I need to replace the motherboard. What I was wanting was to see if anyone can suggest anything at all I haven't tried before I commit to buying another motherboard as I would hate to spend the money only to find I had the same problem. Any and all help/tips will be appreciated.

    Sounds like a dead IGP...
Replace the motherboard or replace the laptop.

It could have been the inverter or a disconnected video cable, but the external monitor ruled it out. It looks like you'll have to replace the motherboard.
