About a year ago I bought an HP Pavilion DV4-1225dx. It has been a good laptop other than the fact that it runs extremely hot and the processor sucks. It has a 780g chipset, and I was wondering if this would support a new Turion II or not. Does anyone know?

    It doesn't work.
The Turion II is using a a new variation of the S1 socket (S1g3).
The previous CPUs were using S1G2 pinout.

Regarding the overheating, have you cleaned out the inside of the laptop for dust and debris? Also, consider undervolting as the Turion X2s achieve some very nice undervolts, which will decrease your maximum temps considerably.

Although it shouldn't work I still hope someone with the resources can try it out.
It is really frustrating that Griffin Turion Owners are stucked with K8L architecture.

The new "Caspian" cpus have a new socket.
But undervolting should do wonders at lowering the temperatures.

S1G3 Sockets are BACKWARDS compatable with S1G2 and S1G1 Processors. us holdouts with the older sockets can't move forward, but that S1G3 socket will go all the way back to TK-32's if memory serves.

Can't u Use the RM or ZM series processors or are they not backwards compatible?

the RM and ZM and QL will all work in S1G2 OR S1G3 socket but they won't work in S1/S1G1 . unless someone makes an adapter plate like in the days of socketing 486SX into 386DX sockets. it should be relatively simple. probably would be a $5 part. but then you have to wonder if the notebook would have height clearance, so you might wind up with having to customize the case, like cut plastic so the CPU HS protrudes thru the bottom.

do you think HWT would be interested in making one of these old-style "sandwich boards" for us S1G1 owners?

I've figured out a way to fab a universal case mod to add the clearance.

    Hello,

I have a similar question, not trying to hijack. I have a Compaq CQ61-410us and it came with a Sempron M120 CPU, is it possible to put a Turion or any faster possibly dual core in it??

Thanks for any help on this.

Looks like that sempron is S1G3, so yes, you could physically put in a Turion/Athlon II. I've seen CQ61's with better, though I am unsure if it will provide over 25w (that cpu's TDP). The grouping is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_Turion_microprocessors#Turion_X2_.2F_Turion_X2_Ultra

I should note to anyone reading this thread, undervolting the Griffin platform turions (RM+ZM+QL's) won't be able to use RMClock or NHC. Google undervolting turion x2 and somewhere is a sourceforge program that will do it. Supposedly. Never tried.

Not sure I trust anyone wanting to be called 'dude'....

I have an MSI gx630 that has socket S1G2 running the QL-62, if I am following right I am able to throw in one of the new Turion II processors even though it has S1G2? I would be looking to get a Turion II Ultra if this would work.

even if someone does make the adapter it will be too thick to fit on a laptop :(

Besides how about the BIOS? I've been reading about them lately and there are quiet few modules in the BIOS that need updating between one generation of CPUs and the next one.

The program for undervolting Turion II is 'K10stat'

Yeah I was thinking it sounded too good to be true for the new Turions to work in the old sockets.

They might work, they might not. Apart the guys that work for AMD no one is sure because no one has tried it yet. Well I couldn't find anyone online who actually has tried the upgrade nor the downgrade from S1G1 to S1G2 or S1G2 to S1G3 or the other way around.

I know that for desktops, a mobo with an AM2 socket should support AM2+ and AM3 CPUS if a BIOS update is available. I had an eMachine d620 not a long time ago. It uses the AM2 socket with a desktop CPU. I tried to upgrade it to a an Athlon II 235e and the laptop didn't even want to turn ON. It should have worked but since the BIOS didn't support this new generation of CPUs my upgrade was a complete failure.

I wish I had the funds to tinker with it, but I'm going to play it safe and just upgrade to the Turion Ultra ZM-86, big boost over the QL-62 I have running in it now.

    Nice move

In my case I knew that I wont be losing I lot if it didn't work. i bought the Athlon II 235e from ebay for £48 and sold it for £46 + auction fees and postage fees.

    Folks,

I have a new MSI CR610 with a Sempron M100 sk S1G3 proc. and I just received a bulk Turion 64 X2 TL-52 sk S1. Did any of you tried before to put a S1 proc on a S1G3 sk and did it worked?

I will try this anyway but I could use some advices..

    Thanks

I just had a hands on a Intel Core i3 Processor sad to say even the lowest end Intel Core i3 M Processor can kick any AMD Turion II's butt and they are cheaper than a AMD M600 equivalent.
So unless you are a AMD Fan you might reconsider the purchase.

I highly doubt the BIOS would support that old chip.

Also, K10Stat will undervolt griffin cpu's as well.
