Which is a faster processor? I'm thinking of getting the dv5000z from HP or the E1505 from Dell, w/ the ML40(2.20single) and the T2400(1.83 dual) respectively.
I don't do much gaming, but I'll mainly be doing internet, office productivity, music and video, burning cds, downloading and what not, everyday things and school work w/ spreadsheets and what not.
Which processor will be faster for my needs, and I also want to consider future proofing my purchase.
Also What can you upgrade down the line in each of these units?(processor, hard drive, ram, etc)
Thanks for the advice![]()

Faster? faster isn't necessarily what you're looking for.
It sounds to me like you'll be doing some serious multi-tasking, and that means Core Duo is for you.
No worries about upgrading, really, 64-bit is nice to have (I use the MT-40) but your situation makes core duo more applicable.
Let's not get into a 64-bit vs. Duo argument in this thread, since the original poster is a multitasker. -
I'll agree w/Coffee, you sound like you need a duo. The e1505 is a good option, but also check into the dv5000t, from HP, has an available duo core, and should be priced very similar to the Dell.

I would go with duo. More and more software will start making use of multi processors, at that point duo will shine.
Not sure what you mean by video, if encoding, then there are already quite a few encoders (even some for music) that can make use of dual core.
In single core applications (cannot make use of dual core) turion will still be faster. But core duo is better at multitasking -
For the stated needs I would go Core Duo, however if you need 64bit (whether it be applications you know you want to run, or that you know you want 64bit vista when it comes out or you feel that 64bit will help keep your laptop working for longer) then get a Turion.
But, based on your needs I would go Core duo. -
Keep in mind that an Athlon64 will be a bit faster than a T64 for the same GHz. To compare 2GHz to 1.83GHz requires a little math on your part.

I'm thinking I may do some gaming down the line, w/ those Lord of the Rings games out and all... anybody know when Dell is going to add a better GPU to its E1505?
And as far as upgrading in the future, say for instance Intel releases a 2.6 Core duo months ahead from now, is the Dell or HP notebook upgradeable?
And I read that Hard drives are upgradeable, as well as RAM for these type of units. -
I guesstimate that the E1505 should be getting the GPU (ATI X1400 or similar) upgrade option in about 1-2 months.

Core duo won't go that far in speed (I think 2.3 max which should be released in Q3). They will be replaced by morem in about a year or less (most likely less). Upgradibility to the new morem is still in doubt and will most likely depend on the specific manufacturers rather than intel's specs.
