I see a lot of talk on this forum about the dual core processors turion x2 and Core duo...but what about the single core versions of each? So the question is...turion or core solo...which would you rather have?

If i had to choose between the two, then the Core Solo would take my pick. Its got the larger cache, and comes with a better architecture. However, the Core Duo is pretty much the same price, and that is a much better processor, than both, because of its dual core funcionality.
-
Same here, I would pick Core Solo. Intel seems to be winning the mobile CPU sector.
-
I'd also get Core Solo, not only is it inherently more powerful, you still have the room to upgrade.
-
The core solo is just an upgraded PM with a faster fsb. So considering the old PM is still a tad faster than the Turion, the new improved core solo is even faster.
-
Super Pi....2 million digits
Core solo 1.6 ghz- 1min. 35 sec.
Turion 64 1.8 ghz- 2min. 12 sec.
WOW. -
Thats a huge difference, but then again, Intel's were always good at SuperPi.
-
Core solos were even performing better in multi threaded applications than the turion x2.
-
how can a single core perform better in multithreaded apps than a dual core cpu?
And what multithreaded apps do u speak of? -
I mean like doing stuff at the same time. And the reason I'm saying this is because I've had experience with both, and when I opened 2 things at the same time core solo got it done faster... I don't know why though..it just did.
-
I don't think that can be deemed multi-threaded, but I can suggest why: It may be that the Solo had a faster clock speed. Anyway, the Turion X2 is no better than the turion on opening or starting programs, because the second core isn't utilized.
-
So the x2 turion is really a single core cpu, since the second core is not utilized? Then why is it there?
-
The Turion X2 is there because it can handle multiple programs at the same time. That means you can play a game and run a virus scan at the same time, and there will be no let down in performace. If you tried to do this with a normal Turion, both programs would suffer slowness. The speed at which programs open doesn't depend on the core-count, but rather the speed of the processor, and other components, such as the hard disk.
-
My turion mt30 1.6 did it in 1:45. You probly had the battery in or were on battery. My 2.2ghz mt40 turion did it in 1:28.
-
And cmon, we all know that 1) super pi isnt the only determining factor in cpu performance 2) intel cpus always do better in that benchmark, because that one specific item benefits from a large l2 cache, which intels tend to have
-
I doubt you would see any day to day performance difference between two processors with a 10 to 20 second difference in their respective super pi results.
