Is there anyway to turn off the screen? like the laptop is still on and not in standby or anything and the screen is off? Like LCD monitors which have a power off button..

and how for long does the LCD on laptops last? will it last 4 years on about 10 hours usage daily?

You can turn off the LCD by going to (under XP) Control Panel > Power Options, then where it has What to do when I...
    Press Power Button
    Press Standby Button
    Close Lid

Set close lid to "do nothing"

When you close the lid, the LCD should turn off (in almost all laptops) however everything else will keep running.

Most notebooks have a Fn key that allows to shut off the back light.

LCD Cold Cathode backlights last a long time. 10,000-20,000 hours so I wouldn't be too worried.

If you are using Vista the process is similar to what Hep! described.

    Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Power Options>Edit Plan Settings.

You can adjust when to turn off the display in there. You can also click on "Change advanced power settings" to edit even more features.

And if u r using XP, right click on the Desktop-->Properties--:Screensaver tab-- :power :- Under power schemes, (turn off monitor) there u can set the time (in Minutes) how long to wait before the monitor/screen is turned off. This is for when the computer is in "idle" state. Meaning with no one using it....

ATi Tray Tools has an option under the Display menu to turn off your monitor. That's what I use most of the time.

Or I stick a fork in the little button thing that detects when the lid is closed. I'm too lazy to move the actual screen. Apparently closing your laptop while it's still on is a big no-no.
