I have an external monitor, and basically my laptop lid is permanently closed. Only time I lift it is to turn on the laptop if I hibernate/shutdown.
I'm thinking of putting the monitor on top of the laptop (how much mass can the top of a T61p lid take?). Only problem is, I'll either have to never shutdown my computer, or find a way to it turn on through an external means.
I'm thinking of something like connecting a wire to the turn-on switch or something with a push button. Any suggestions?

yes, open the notebook and connect two wires to the on button, then I guess you would touch the wires together every time you want to turn it on?

Maybe you can configure the computer for Wake on USB? If so, then you could set your keyboard as the wake up device?

Does your notebook have an Infra red remote?
I used to turn mine on via remote control or quick dock -

This Wake on USB thing sounds interesting. Do I have to press a certain sequence of keys or something? Will any external keyboard work for this?
The 2 wire method is plausible as well, but only if the Wake on USB won't work. It is, after all, a bit dangerous. -

It's easy to test, go into the BIOS and enable the wake on usb feature (if it's there).
I think any usb device (like a mouse) should also wake it.
Correct me if I'm wrong. -
I couldn't find that Wake on USB option in the BIOS.. Does anyone have experience with the Thinkpad Bios? My Bios version is 2.17

can you upload photos of your BIOS, maybe we can help spot it?

Im pretty sure wake/resume on USB only works when in sleep mode because it generates a wake event. I think you are after Power on USB which ive only seen in desktops.
Is it wired to a router? you could try WOL (wake on LAN) -
It is wired to a router. How do I take a screenshot of my Bios? I don't have a camera
