What is the brand (Hitachi, Samsung, Toshiba, WD, etc) of the typical OEM drive for these Thinkpad lines?

    • T61/T61P?
    • T400/T500?

Depends on what's cheapest at the time, basically the best deal they can get from the drive supplier. I know my T61 here has a Hitachi in it, but it's an encrypted drive, so I don't know if that limited the manufacturer's choice.

I believe almost all IBM/Lenovos ship with Hitachi Drives. A few years back, Hitachi and IBM contracted work together to make harddrives. They still do a lot of work together, so usually the thinkpads will come with a Hitachi drive in them.

The six Thinkpads in my family all have Western Digital OEM drives and they were all bought at different times over the last four years. Capacities range from 120 GB - 250 GB. None have free-fall sensor or encryption.

The two IdeaPads in our family both have Hitachi OEM drives.

My sisters T61 shipped with a 80gb seagate 5400.3 drive and my T60 went out with a 120gb fujitsu. According to their service manual they use basically everything.

    I've had IBM/Hitachi travelstars come with all of my ThinkPads (160GB 5k250 in x200, 160GB 5k320 in x200 Tablet).

    In the past:
    Thinkpad A22e (15GB IBM Travelstar 4200rpm)
    Thinkpad T30 (30GB Hitachi Travelstar 4200rpm)
Thinkpad T42p (40GB Hitachi Travelstar 5400rpm) ODDLY NOT CAME WITH A 7200RPM drive
    Thinkpad T61 (80GB WD Scorpio Blue WD800BEVS 5400rpm)

Oddly my current Thinkpad (T61) have a WD drive which is very quiet BTW.

They use many vendors. If you're looking for a particular brand, just get the smallest drive and upgrade to what you want. That's usually less expensive too.

Like Zaz said, they use many vendors. I got mine with a Fujitsu 80 GB 5400rpm drive.
