    Hello all,
So I've made up my mind, I'm going to buy an Alienware M11x notebook. I plan to get the Core 2 Duo model over the i5/i7 one...because I'm not THAT much of a crazy gamer and cheapness may have been a factor too. Anyway the cheaper M11x now only comes with a ULV processor. This got me thinking, Is it possible to swap a ULV with a standard processor? because 1.3 Ghz is kinda weak, and an overclock to 1.7Ghz can only help to a point.

The cpu is soldiered on, so you can change it but it is really hard.

yes u can't change it.. its literally impossible and will cost u so much that u might well have bought a new laptop instead.. if i were u , i'd just get the core i5 or core i7.... u'll regret it if u be a cheapo and get a core 2 duo model..

the thing is the i5 one is only a 1.06Ghz processor :\ and I don't have the money for an i7. It seems like the only way I can get this and keep it in budget is to overclock the i5. Kudos to dell for actually putting overclocking into a laptop. Is it safe to assume I can overclock the i5 to 1.8Ghz if that is it's max turbo frequency? Or is it possible to go higher?

Why? The i5-520UM has built in turbo boost up to 1.73GHz, while the Core 2 Duo is stuck at 1.3GHz unless you overclock. And even at 1.06GHz the i5-520UM will be faster than the SU7300.

    Take the Intel Core i5.
You get the added benefit of Nvidia Optimus that adds extra time when you run around using the battery too. :)

The turboboost function isn't a continuous overclock the clocks move up and down as needed. If I set the overclock myself it will always run at that speed, giving me benefits in things other than games and demanding applications. So i guess my mind has been changed, I'm now going to get it with the i5. :p :)

yes but if u could wait a while and get i7.. it should be slightly better and with CPU not being replaceable extra headroom will help.

Why do you need the max speed at all times? You won't notice a difference between 1Ghz and 3GHz if you're doing basic tasks.
