hey guys i have a compaq c702TU laptop which is running an intel celeron M530 processor at 1.72ghz.
im running vista with 1.5 gigs of ram and my cpu is always at 100% and it starts to heat up a bit.
is it possible to change the cpu to a cheap core 2 dup? the other laptops in the same series have a core 2 duo option i think.

if it is possible to change/ upgrade the cpu, how easy or difficult will it be?
im sure a cheap core 2 duo will make a huge improvement to the laptop, but is it worth changing the cpu?

First if your CPU is always running, something going on in the background figure out what that is. Even with a Celeron it looks like there is an issue. On to upgrading, what chipset? That will tell you if it supports C2D if so as long as Bios supports yes is likely an option. If that all looks good as long as CPU is PGA not BGA it should be relatively simple, plug in and go. If BGA no can't be done.

thanks for the reply. i get a 100% cpu usage when i have 3+ windows open... forgot to mention that. whenever i listen to music + surf the web etc the cpu usage goes really high and touches 100% quite often, even with a format of windows it still happens.
regarding upgrading, all i know is my chipset is an intel 965. no idea if the cpu is PGA or BGA. (dont even know what that means)
    thanks

edit - if it is possible, how much would a low cost core 2 duo cpu cost for laptops? is the cpu for laptops and desktops the same, or are the laptop ones differnet?

The C702TU is the Compaq Business counterpart of the dv5000 series. Should be of similar specifications and will be socket M. It can be upgraded.

You might want to look into Compaq/HP's website for the system BIOS Firmware update so that it would support newer processors like Penryn(T8300+).

To be honest, upgrading a processor on HP's line of products will deem difficult for the average user as significant disassembly will be required unlike some machines that have a simple hatch at the rear. You will need to take apart at least the top case to access the socket area. If you do not have any experience building computers, I would suggest a technician to upgrade your system instead of attempting it yourself.

im prob gonna give it to a technician to do it, i just wanted to know if its possible. i checked hp's website and there are 3 more laptops in the c7xx series which use the same intel 965 express chipset and run on dual cores and core 2 duo's. so if i do pick up a core 2 duo it should not be a prob right?
what do i do with the bios n stuff? where can i pick up a mobile core2duo for laptops? im from india, dunno if the local hardware guy will have laptop cpu's

I can't help you find in India, but yes the 965 will support C2D. PGA is Pin Grid Array, it plugs in so can unplug and replace. BGA Ball Grid Array is soldered so can't replace. Most standard voltage are PGA but no guarantee.

Intel Core 2 Duos are powerful. Anything Core 2 Duo at even 1.5GHz or over will perform very well for quite sometime... if a little more high performance stuff is what you're doing, any Core 2 Duo at 1.83GHz or over will last a good 3 years or more...
