hey guys, I just attempted to apply my thermal paste but I failed big time. My CPU temp went up by about 2 degrees, and my gpu temp just went straight up crazy, 15 degrees plus. When I run a movie, gpu temp went 90C+. Big thing is I dont know what I did wrong. Did I put too much or the gpu isnt touching the heatsink?

Also I see 4 squares on 2 sides of gpu (2 squares on each side). What are those? Those are covered by the heatsink as well but I was running out of ICD7 so I put very little on each. Maybe that is the cause of the high temp?

also my last question is, is it ok to put a thick layer of ICD7 to replace a pad? I heard ICD7 could be used as a thick layer.

    any help is appreciated...Thank you

    Wow. Epic fail, haha.

You shouldn't put so much thermal paste on your GPU. Here is a little reference you can use to help you. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5027711&postcount=520

The two blocks on each side of the GPU are the GPU memory. Do not put any paste on those. Keep the thermal pads on the memory.

    Thanks Soviet Sunrise.

The problem is I am afraid that my heatsink is pretty ing far from the gpu. A thin layer wont do it.
for the memory, I ed up and threw away the pads. Is putting paste on it ok? I guess thats my only choice now.

im planning to get a icd24 and do all this again -.-

Throwing away the pads is a big mistake. Putting paste on it is not going to help if it doesn't bond with the heatsink. Putting more paste is not the solution either.

Do you have a picture of your GPU core and the heatsink? Also, what laptop do you have?

I think your going to have to get a thin sheet of copper to fix the problem.

But you will need to work out how thick it should be on your own
