Hi! I have an HP Pavilion dm4-1165dx.

I just arrived at my hotel in the UK, pulled out my plug adapter to charge my nearly dead notebook, and realized that my HP power cord has a 3-pin plug, and my UK plug adapter only has holes for a 2-pin US plug.

I can plug the HP power cord into the adapter, but the ground pin is not connected (it runs along the bottom of the adapter, while the other 2-pins are plugged into the adapter).

I have no access to any stores before I need to use my laptop for a work presentation (on a borrowed iPad right now) and I have no transportation. I need to find out if I will fry my computer if I plug it in with the ground pin 'disconnected'....or if I need to figure out how to get all my work onto this iPad so I use the iPad while I'm in the UK instead of my notebook.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks!

#1 I would not worry. If you can plug in to charge do. #2 if so worried just ground it. #3 why delete?

You have to ask a mod for a delete, but I just moved it to hardware and removed your other thread.

On topic, just plugging it in without the ground won't fry it as far as I know, but I'd avoid doing it repeatedly.

Plugging it in without the ground won't (normally) fry the computer - it could fry you though (be careful).

It was said above about how it will not "normally" fry it. True, but as an extra measure of safety the "ground" plug is added. Like in the old days with a 3 prong conversion too 2 prong. If concerned wrap some wire around the 3rd prong tightly and unscrew the holding plate a little. wrap the end not connected to the 3rd prong around that screw. Tighten. I use high draw equipment but in a "jam" I do what I must and that includes ripping out plug #3 with pliers.

The ground is great. Safety is great but in a pinch/bind? We do what we have to do. You remember the 2prong to 3prong adaptor? How many people actually properly "ground"? So you should be OK. The "Fry you" comment above must be in jest. Just do not make yourself "the path of least resistance".

    Got local friends?

Ask if anyone have an extra cable that you could borrow. You charger is universal anyways if it says 110-240V on the back.
(in my opinion: hotels could sell those themselves or just loan them)
