I have a USB 2 external hard drive that is externally powered, 3.5", and spinning at 7200 RPM. How are these speeds for it?

Is USB 2 the limiting factor for the data transfer speed?

Yeah, good ole USB 2.0 is limiting what it can do.

Bluetooth is almost as fast. ;)

From a similar eHDD but USB 3.0 connected to my USB 3 laptop (with SSD), what would be the maximum sustainable speed for transfers?

That would be basically at the external HDD's limits: around 100 MB/s at the outer edges and about 40GB/s on the slower, inside tracks. (Depending of course on what HDD it actually was...).

    It would be 40MB/s.

Still, find out the model of the hard drive in the enclosure and then you can find a HD Tune graph - example.
