I think I have a handy DIY project to do![]()
USB 3.0 to most people means more speed but along with the huge speed boost for data transfer the power output also went up 9 fold.
From 100ma to 900ma.
Imagine what that means for cooling pads that do not use an external power supply and only use the USB port?

Isn't usb2.0 500mA?
-
USB 3.0 runs at 5V voltage, and 100mA - 900mA current.
Device power draw is variable anywhere in that current range... they do not always need to draw the max 500mA / 900mA, depending on the power requirements of the device. -
If you are looking for more power for your USB laptop cooling pad, perhaps some other problems should be addressed first? -

Point being more power less cords
I dont have a cooling pad right now, dont need one the G73 keeps really cool even overclocked. However I would like to see USB 3.0 used to full advantage and not just for the obvious. -
Erm, the U3 cooler I had didn't have a power supply. It was powering 3 fans off the USB 2.0 bus. And also my mouse and keyboard.

yea...
erm this usb 2.0 hard drive being powered off my USB 2.0 is 1.5a
so... USB 3.0... maybe you can get about 4a? -
If you need a fan that powerful then your system needs other help, nothing a little 80/90MM (or even 120MM) fan is gonna cure.
I always say, if you've got to overclock then you bought the wrong piece of hardwareThen again what do i know

No one HAS to overclock. And I'm sure there are people out there with 480 GTX SLI who still overclock their gpus just for the sake of it. -
Cooler Master just made one, although I don't remember if its up for sale anywhere yet... Cooler Master intros the SF-19 USB 3.0-equipped laptop cooling pad | TechConnect Magazine
Personally, I don't think it looks that good, even with all the features, but USB 3.0 is there.
I'll stick with my Cryo. -

I dont need a cooling pad (for the 2nd time now) I just thought it would be an interesting point to make that USB 3.0 offers more power than USB 2.0 and most people are only going to think of 3.0 as a means for faster data transfer and not think about the possibilities of higher power availability.
Some laptop coolers run off USB only and they are not very powerful, others have an optional or required external DC power jack. These have the power but are cumbersome with the extra hassles and cords.
So the point of the thread is to just examine how much USB 3.0 can bridge the gap between the two. Can we get stronger USB 3.0 cooling pads that rival those that use DC adapters without the extra hassles?
To find out I was thinking of building my own just for testing not out of need. I dont have 3.0 on my laptop though anyways only my desktop. -

I would rather have a 12v 375mA usb port than a 5v 900mA one, so I could run my 12v rans at their full speed without any trouble.

I learned recently that you can get your power adapters voltage from a few places... including (on the subject of inverters) your motherboards line to the LCD backlight inverter.
Would make an interesting project to see how much extra power you can get and use from just that line...
A opposed to a laptop that is older and you've somehow managed to upgrade far beyond all odds and its design specifications to perform the same? -
i'd rather not if people realise there is more power availible they will start to have less efficient ways of usin the power availible to them it's been seen with processing power so will it be with current -
Could you imagine a 900mA notebook cooler? As in one that uses the full power supply of the USB 3.0 bus? The fans would be spinning so fast it would float your alienware slab 2 feet off your desk. And the downdraft would probably make your face turn to jelly. Now that I think about it, that would be awesome.

hmmm...i got USB 3.0. i wonder if my cryo's fans will run any faster if i plug it into my laptop.
