Hey guys I was wondering if anybody could give me a little help into my problem. The problem is I bought a USB 2.0 hub for my notebook an Aspire 5500 series because I have a few usb devices and the ports on my machine three are not adequate for my needs. The thing is when I plug in my external HDD it tells me that I have not plugged my device into a high speed USB port? but if I plug it into any of the notebooks three usb ports it works perfectly. My box is USB 2.0 and I doubled check the hub I bought and it says it supports USB 2.0? Could it be I bought a non 2.0 hub or is it a problem with my ports not being able to support hi-speed transfer through an external hub? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does Device Manager indicate any problems?
Maybe need to load USB 2 drivers for the Ext hub??
It may also be a power problem, I have heard of those before on NB.
Can U test the Hub on a DT to see if U have same problem??

Make sure your windows already come with a SP1 or SP2, even your laptop's usb port supports USB 2.0, but your windows doesn't have a driver, it only backward to USB 1.1 or 1.0. If it is not above this issue, probably, you have to replace and use another USB 2.0 HUB.

It could be that the hub doesn't supply enough power for the hard drive. I know my external hard drive has two USB plugs, one for the power and one for the connection. Do you know whether or not the USB hub is powered?

yes, I had exactly the same problem...AC power to the hub itself fixed the problem.

I got a hub from staples, its a "Staples" brand hub, it works awsome, you can use it with or without the included 5v power plug. Keyboards mice and flash drives work fine without the power, plug in any kind of external hd and it probably wont even be recougnized by windows. You definatly need ac power if you want it to perform or even sometimes work.
