For some reason, my laptop keeps killing my mice. This is the third USB optical mouse to die on me. I just purchased the mouse a few days ago, and now it's already acting up. The first mouse, the left button stopped working, the second would turn itself off and on, and now the third one is also, turning itself on and off. I've tried reinstalling my drivers, scanning for viruses, malware, spyware, etc. It all turns up nothing. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? It's funny though, because I can connect my ipod, cooling fan, etc, without any sort of problem. The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1440, Windows 7 x64, and it's about a year old, I believe.
Thanks,
Mike

Have you tried different USB ports? Also do you have the "Let Windows turn-off the device to save power" option on?

Same results when using other ports. It will work for a few minutes when switching to another port, but will display the same symptoms after a few minutes. I've also made sure that, that option was disabled.

what brand mouse? try a better brand maybe?

The first mouse that failed was a Microsoft brand mouse and the other two are made by Logitech.

Your motherboard might have a short that's causing the USB ports to behave badly. Have you tried plugging in other devices such as a keyboard, hard drive, etc? If any or all display the same symptoms, the motherboard will likely need to be replaced.

My Ipod and usb cooling fan work without incident. It's just the mouse that malfunctions.

I've connected each one to my other computer and get the same issues. It's almost like my laptop is shorting them out.

I can't believe that a notebook can supply enough power (through USB) to destroy (selectively) just mice.
Plug in your mouse, go to each USB hub device in Device Manager and uninstall each one.
Shut down your computer.
Unplug all USB devices.
Restart your system and make sure that the system finishes installing (and rebooting, if necessary) all USB Root / Hub devices.
Now, plug in your mice and hopefully they work as they're meant too.
Good luck.
