    USB Port Broken. Get It Fixed?

    One of my three USB ports on my HP laptop is broken. Anything I plug into it, just won't work.

    I have two working ones, so getting it fixed isn't a priority, but I'm wondering if I should.

    The thing is, I don't want to take my laptop in for repairs, and be without it for a couple weeks or anything like that.

    Is fixing a USB port something that can be done in a day or two?

    it either needs to be resoldered or you need a new motherboard. how long that takes depends on parts. the labor is probably at most a couple hours (including teardown, repair, rebuild).

    your call if you want to get it fixed.

    if its under warranty, i'd get it fixed asap. if not, i'd live with it because it will require a new mobo which is a minimum of $350-400

    Yeah, it's under warrenty, and it isn't even close to running out, so time isn't an issue.

    My only issue is how long I'll be without it... :p

    What does "anything" mean? Have you tried any devices that are power only (for instance my BT headset can be connected to the computer to charge). That would tell you for sure that the port is broken. I have had ports on laptops (also from HP) that just wouldn't recognize any devices plugged into them, no matter the device I tried, but they weren't physically broken. How are you monitoring the port? Just by not seeing the new hardware bubble? You should also watch in the device manager for the computer to be finding somthing, because if it is, then you could fix it with a software reinstall, which wouldn't be too hard to do.

    Well I had a dell serviced recently and everything needed to be done (mobo/hd etc) I can't remember exactly how long it took but it was under two weeks.

    My wirelss Microsoft mouse won't work when it is plugged into it. Nor will my printer, or my mp3 player, when they are plugged into it. But they all work when I use them with other ports.
