there is probably a better way to solve this but all I can think of now is to backup all your files and then make a clean install of windows.

hopefully someone will have a better answer.

Have you installed chipset drivers for your laptop?

remove usb controllers from device manager, reboot and let windows reinstall drivers?

The first thing I would do to troubleshoot is to reinstall any drivers that does with your mouse. The mouse should work regardless, but it's a good place to start.

If the problem persists, I agree to uninstal/reinstall the USB from the device manager, then reinstall Windows if there's still no luck.

Are you plugging the mouse direct to the notebook's USB port(s) or via a hub?

    cheers ...

Well there was a solution. I had the same problem as u yesterday. I did this to solve it. I shutdown my laptop and disconnected the battery and ac power. Then i held the power button of my laptop down for a while to discharge the static electricity. After that i started up the laptop and had no problem with my usb mouse not working

you didn't discharge the static electricity. You reset the BIOS.

    what do you mean?

If you disconnect the AC power, take out the battery and hold the power button down for a while it will reset the BIOS on most notebooks.

lol i had a problem a few months ago of when my laptop didn't start up. So i called the hp tech and he told me to do this as according to him, it discharged static electricity. Don't know about this BIOS thing.

Well I just tried it on my notebook and I'm wrong, it doesn't reset the BIOS.
I guess I learned not to believe everything I read on the net.
