To start, what model do you have? We'll need to find out whether it's a hardware issue or a driver/software issue.

Do you know if the drivers for the USB ports are installed? What OS are you running? If you're running anything starting with Windows 95 2nd Edition, USB ports are generally automatically installed. If you're running Windows, you can verify that the drivers are installed and working by going to the System control panel, and clicking either the Device Manager tab (Win 95, 98), or clicking the Hardware tab and choosing Device Manager (Win 2k, XP).

You'll see a list of installed hardware...at the bottom should be a device class called "Universal Serial Bus controllers." Clicking the + should expand the list and show you a USB Root Hub or or two, and a Host Controller.

Perhaps if you don't see anything listed, you can choose an option from the menubar to scan for hardware changes-and perhaps the controller will be detected and the driver installed. However, it's extremely rare that the drivers are not present, and the controller and root hub not installed.

If your ports are damaged in one way or another, or the controller isn't working, and if you have a Cardbus PCMCIA slot, you can get this or one like it (just type short compact USB PCMCIA into ebay):

I have one and it works great. I've used it in my older T22 with no issues.
