I'm interested in some sort of video capture device that I can record from outside sources (vhs, camcorder, dvd, etc.) to my computer or DVD burner. Anyone know of one of these?

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Eric

BTW, don't get Plextor products. Support is dismal and not the company that they once were.

Is the Dazzle a pretty good device? I want something that is reliable, but still produces good product. Not really sure how these work, but maybe something that had the option to burn straight to disk without using any hd space as a buffer? (don't even know if thats possible)
Having it burned to hd is a good option when editing, but for just ripping?

pinnacle sucks . i have the hd usb with storage and the software sucks , much prefer my avermedia hc 80 expresscard and avermedia usb tv . both have great easy to use software and pip , pop ,adjustable scrren size software is great, pinnacle is just over priced crap .limiteed screensises , either small or large , cannot drag to adjust size , no pip or pop .
ulead is not bad , actually good but i only know from anolog , not hd . but if thier digital hd tv tuners are as good as the anologue was it's good

Thanks for the insight jerry. Like I said before I'm completely clueless with this stuff. What is the difference between the analog and digital hd tv tuners? And what would constitute the need for each.

IMO I love Pinnacle. It is good enough quality, not HD but not bad, I have the Dazzle DVC170 AKA the Dazzle Plat and I love it. It works great, I've owned it for about 8 months and never had problems. You can record with S-Video or Composite Cables. Not difficult to install software at all, if you have vista you simply download the correct driver, which I had to do. I would 100% encourage you to purchase your own for the price of about 90 bucks possibly cheaper depending where you get it.

Have you thought about using an expressCard TV tuner? Like the Avermedia ExpressCard Tuner, using the ExpressCard slot will allow for higher performance and bandwidth, and it'll take up less CPU power allowing for higher resolution capturing.

To be perfectly honest with you, I have no idea what I'm doing. Just found out about these things and it seemed like a cool concept. What will be the extra uses of the card that you're talking about? My only plans are really transferring old vhs and camcorder videos to dvd. My engine company and I have also been experimenting with video taping some of our training, fires, and calls and making 'youtube' type videos with them. So, you guys are the experts, what do you think I need?

Well the card would be much more portable with it's smaller form factor and would directly slide into your expressCard slot instead of taking up more wires and cables.

It would jut out about an inch out the expresscard slot, so it'll be more convenient especially if your on the go and need one less cable to remember to carry around. All you will then need is the AV cable for capturing from your vhs or camcorder. As usability goes it should be no different than a USB capture device, and it would actually perform better due to the bandwidth capabilities of the expressCard port.

Thanks D3X! I've noticed alot of the usb devices come with editting software. I'd like to be able to do a little editting, just minor/fun amateur stuff. Something else I'd like is to be able to 'grab' still pictures from the video. Is this all something that would be possible with both the express card and usb device?

D3X, is there a usb device that'd you'd prefer if I decide to go with it over the express card? My only reasoning would be to possibly use the device on a desktop.

Thanks for everyones help. I'm completely shooting in the dark here, and have no idea what I'm really looking for, if it wasn't for the board I'd really be lost.

Wow guys, thanks for all the input. I've gotten some great feedback and I really appreciate it. I still have no idea what I need to buy, but have learned that I have alot more research to do.

Is there a card that will double as an hdmi/s-video/rca output?? or is this something that I've gotta get completely seperate. I just purchased a t61p, and read that the vga - svideo adapters don't work.

    Thanks again.
