Hello, I am in dire need of some help. I have 4 USB 2.0 ports on my laptop and I recently reformatted my computer to clear out a bunch of useless stuff. After installing XP and the drivers disc that came with it, my USB ports only seem to be running at a 1.0 speed and whenever I plug in my external hard drive on the right port, my computer always jams up.

When I go to device manager and under USB connections, it states that I have 8 ports!!! I haven't seen any drivers for the USB ports on Hp's website but maybe someone can figure it out here.

Model: Compaq R4012US Athlon 2.0 ghz, 512 RAM, 80 gig HD, DVDRW, etc etc.

    Thanks!

Right-click one of them, uninstall it, and reboot - see what happens then. It could just be a configuration problem.

Also go into the BIOS on startup and reset to defaults. Doing a Windows update isn't a bad idea either.

If that doesn't work, find out your chipset and you can see if there are updated drivers. Chaz is probably right, though, sounds like a configuration problem.

Are you running XP SP1 or later? Have you checked for drivers on the manufactuer web site?

best way to resolve the issue is to follow the drastic measure action, i.e. clean install WinXP --which is, reformat then reinstall. you'll determine then whether it is simply an OS configuration/driver corruption, or hardware based.

All I can think of has been covered. You need the ATI chipset installed.

The other thing you can check is the BIOS. Make sure it isn't set to only run USB 1.1.

You have to press a key as your machibe first boots. Depending on the make and model #, it will usually be either ESC or F2 or DEL.

Once in the BIOS, you will have to look through the BIOS options to find one that refers to USB.

are you using a USB hub by any chance ? If so, remove it.

Make sure your device is usb 2.0 !

If you have sp2 installed, there's no reason it falls back to 1.1

One thing to note, it is not possible to DOWNLOAD the drivers for USB from the manufacturer. Microsoft is making the drivers, and it is included with sp2.
