Hello i would like to know if any of you know what could be causing my usb ports on my laptop to stop working for a few seconds (or even in some cases i have to restart my computer to get activity back in them). I have tried reformatting and reinstalling the drivers for both my headset and my mouse.
If you need some computer specifics let me know and i will post them up or any other questions you have I will be keeping close track on this thread and try to respond asap! Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

okay, shut your system down, and use a fan or a compressor, to blow dust/anything which may be stuck in the usb adaptor.
Also, check to see that the port is not physically bent.
If the port is bent a little bit, simply bend it back with a flathead screwdriver.
just be careful and do this when the system is off.
If its not a hardware problem, than its a software issue.
You should download and reinstall your usb 2.0 drivers.
Good luck,

alright going to go and make sure its clean, theres 3 different ports that is this is happening to, is there a way i can figure out if its a software issue or hardware issue? i've reformatted but i'm not sure where i can find USB 2.0 drivers

i have a Toshiba Satellite m65-s9092, device manager looks the same when they are working and not working, both my USB headset and my logitech G5 mouse have problems with the drives not staying active. i notice that it also stops working faster when the computer is warm (not overheating type warm, just warmer than the computer sitting there doing nothing)
edit: gentile touching or pushing isn't making the device start working either. -
Here is a link to Toshiba drivers for you notebook I do not see USB drivers. Why? I don't know. Here is a link to a non Toshiba site I only got it thru Google so be careful as I don't mistrust it or trust it, link. Now I said I don't know so here is my suggestion for drivers. Go to device manager and uninstall the USB drivers. Then restart that will force Windows XP to identify and reinstall, with XP this works fine on many things. Am thinking USB are so universal that there are not special drivers for your model Windows has.
-
uninstall the drivers for my mouse / headset or for my USB ports?
-
I am working under the assumption USB issue right now so USB drivers. You have followed K-T's advice? While because all 3 affected and different devices not of a similar type, it is unlikely, it is still the best place to start. Then try what I am saying.
-
i did everything he told me to do except for download the USB 2.0 drivers, but thats because i was unable to find any. you linked me some and i haven't installed them yet because I'm not sure if they are good. i see alot of USB drivers in my device manager. heres a list (which ones should i uninstall)
intel(r) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal host controller - 2658
intel(r) 82801FB/FBM USB Universal host controller - 2659

OK this is starting to get more specific than I feel comfortable advising you. Only insofar as not being an expert I do not want to put you in a worse place than you are (not overly concerned but if it happened I would feel bad). Ok I just checked my device manager. Much is MS so believe the drivers come from Windows and if you did as I said Windows would find. As such I would not have a problem using the search for newer driver feature or just deleting as I believe the drivers are in the OS and will be found. I use instinct as I am not educated give a little time as someone who really knows their stuff will post. My advice which I am not recommending (what I would do) is delete all MS drivers you have listed they will be found. But please just wait for someone else to suggest. Sorry!

It looks like everything is fine from your list
I have never seen that many host controllers in a single laptop.
Your best bet is to reinstall the USB drivers.
Here is a link, you can download USB 2.0 drivers from:
http://www.pro-star.com/drivers/4774/D47U_USB2_w2k.zip
If you cant retrieve the download for whatever reason, than I recommend running a windows update, and only installing the USB driver
EDIT: I also recommend downloading Microsoft Framework support, you may have version 1.1 or earlier, which does not support many peripheral devices
I also have the G5 laser mouse, do you use the logitech drivers which came with the mouse, or the standard windows drivers?
I know on my Voodoo, the touchpad shares the same driver, so I get internal conflicts, with Logitsch SetPoint. So I simply use the default windows drivers.
If you are using Logitech setpoint, it may be acting up on you. I recommend uninstalling/reinstalling Logitech setpoint.
If none of this works, this may be some kind of spyware or weak virus, which could be blocking the usb controller from working properly.
Run an AVG or Norton scan and see if it finds anything.
Just a question:
Did you ever change the COM settings for your serial and parallel hubs on your laptop.
The Parallel and Serial Hub share the same internal contoller, so if you change the com from say 11 to com 7, you could have allocated the parallel port to overwrite the USB controller.
If worse comes to worse, the ultimate fix is reinstalling the operating system.
I hope this fixes it,

Thank you K-T, I feel comfortable playing fast and loose on my own but don't want to steer others that way. Know what I mean? Sometimes sure but not unless I really know.
-
hehe thanks anyway powerpack, for trying to help
-
K-t,i am indeed using the logitech setpoint, and my windows update has no newer updates on the list, i have installed everything they have had for me. I personally haven't changed the COM settings. The problem is this is still happening after reinstalling the operating system (windows XP media center edition)
update: running an AVG scan right now, and also it seems whenever the mouse goes out, if i try to watch a movie or do anything it with sound, it gets kinda choppy every 15 seconds or so -
Update 2: one of my friends said legacy mode might be turned on in bios, and indeed it is turned on. could that be affecting anything? i'm not sure what that does, and i'm going to update my bios right now to see if that helps things out also.
-
Legacy mode in a laptop?
Wow thats kinda strange
Do you mean Legacy USB?
If so than that makes sense.
You want to put the USB ports to USB1.1 + USB 2.0 mode
I would also flash the bios if there is a newer version.
Good luck
K-TRON -
yeah i mean legacy USB, should i disable it (would it help?)
i flashed bios and updated to a newer version and i'm still having the same problems. -
Disable the legacy USB, and try booting it up.
If this doesnt work, I dont know what to tell you.
Its not often that a question comes up, which powerpack and I cannot answer.
K-TRON -
hmm.. kinda joining this thread late but it could be a Windows issue aside from what's already known or suggested. If the legacy USB issue doesn't work, then we'll have to back up right to the beginning again and try to diagnose exactly what the problem could be.
When did this start happening? Was this a constant issue right from the beginning or did this just start recently? -
ok i will try out rebooting and turning off legacy mode, it started happening a week ago and it has worked fine for a year and a half before, so its not an issue from the start
-
mooga I hope you don't mind but D3X mooga already reinstalled his OS so I agree with your strategy but wanted to let you know. It is nonsensical? Which from the start was a big concern of mine but did not want to say. Software problems are less likely to be intermittent than hardware problems and to be honest and give mooga credit he said when it gets hotter it is more pronounced. So what I didn't want to say last night is I am leaning toward a new MoBo. D3X help this fellow and I hope you solve as I will learn if you do but just so crazy.
-
thanks power
yeah i'm guessing its a hardware issue too now, but i have no idea how to replace a Motherboard or even where to go to get it repaired
-
mooga,
Well I checked ebay but they do not have any replacement motherboards.
What I found, is that you need a good fatherboard to straighten your motherboard out.
Here is where you can get one:
http://product.pelltechnology.com/Toshiba_Satellite_M65-S9092_Motherboard_Replacement.asp
Jk about the fatherboard.
That website has a new motherboard for your system. But at $495, it doesnt seem like a good option.
I would email them, cause they have motherboard repair facilities which would cost about $150.
Email them and ask if they have ever had to fix a problem similar to yours.
Hopefully they have fixed it before, and you only have to pay a few $$$ to get it fixed.
Good luck

tiny update: Disabling Legacy mode didn't help, the ports still become inactive after a few mins of the comp being on. I put in a msg to the people at pelltechnology K-Tron, waiting for a responce from them. thanks to everyone for the help so far, i'll keep checking back and trying new stuff out if anyone else has some ideas
-
hello guys, i have found a reason to why this is happening i think. i just was playing around with my computer and the usb ports dont seem to be shutting off when i run without a power cord. it only happens when i use a power cord as a power source, is there any way i can fix it?
-
OK that is nonsensical are you sure? Test and confirm. If it is, it seems hardware. New MoBo! But like I said test and confirm!
-
well its been working for like 30 mins now, without the mouse going out i havn't changed anything except for not having the powercord plugged in. i plug it in and after the battery gets charged upto 100% the mouse goes out
-
i have figured out when i apply pressure just under the monitor and above the keyboard, everything goes normal, when i let up on the pressure the ports turn off and if i'm inside World of warcraft, it becomes laggy.
-
As we mentioned, its some kind of hardware issue.
The only thing you can do, is take apart your laptop, and try reconnecting a loose cable. I have not ever seen a laptop which the usb is connected to the controller via a cable.
It seems as if a piece of hardware is not connected properly, which is by chance shorting out the USB hub. When you apply pressure, you may be temporarily moving the wire, so that the wires do not short the usb, hub, but the only way to find out, is to take the system apart, and physically make sure that everything is connected properly.
K-TRON -
okay well i'll be taking it apart in the morning and looking at it, i've seen some posts around here with step by step guides for taking apart certin types of laptops, but none with my computer. any other ideas on step by step guides for taking apart a toshiba Satellite m65-s9092?
thanks for your help k-tron -
Mooga, you are in luck, I found a nice guide for you on taking apart your system
This article is how to get down to the motherboard and processor:
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba_Satellite_M65/take_apart_laptop_1.htm
This article is related to removing the plastic shell and bezels around the lcd:
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba_Satellite_M65/remove-lcd-screen-1.htm
The guide is pretty good and has many pictures.
Just a tip, get a nice clean open space. and then remove the screws. Do so slowly, but make sure that you put them by the outside of the laptop, in the general area, which they were removed from. That way, when you go to put the system back together, you will know exactly which screws do where.
K-TRON -
wow that guide looks great! thanks
-
Revival - Mooga, did you ever get this sorted out?!? You've left us hanging! I am suffering the exact same issue with my M60, same as an M65.
