The problem: at work I have to transfer large files between the work desktop and my personal laptop (laptop = main computer, desktop = processing workhorse). However, the restrictive permissions setup by IT only allow network transfers via a network drive: => long time to upload the file to the network server; long time to download it. All this for two computers 20cm apart.
So, I need a more efficient solution (and one that doesn't require constant (un)plugging such as external HDD). I'm thinking of a USB to USB cable such as this one, for instance: http://www.cwol.com/usb/usb-2-usb-data-link-file-transfer-cable-uc250.htm
The USB cable should not require admin rights to be USED. It can require admin rights to have its software INSTALLED, since I can get the IT administrator to do that for me; but it should be USABLE with regular privileges.
So, given this requirement, can you recommend any brands/particular models for this component?
Thanks in advance.

LAN cable? should be much faster...
-
That is not possible, since the LAN port of the desktop has to be used to connect to the work network. Similarly for the laptop.
This should be an "always on" solution that works without disabling any other functionality such as wired network access. Since I will be using it regularly.
USB speeds should be enough I guess. -
Why not use a usb Flash drive ?
I have a 8Gb drive on my keychain
This way is so easy

Belkin (usually very reliable brand):

EDIT: i'm fairly sure none of these cables require any sort of priviledges (or drivers) to work. Plug n' Play (well, more like Transfer, but you get the idea) at its best. -
Thanks for the useful info.
Found these:

apparently requires admin rights to copy. So no go.

I wonder why 'Vista' is in the name, and whether it supports XP. Both my laptop and the desktop are running XP.
I guess my best bet is the Targus... -
These cables use the Windows Easy Transfer software to share data. It says Vista because the Vista program is stored on the cable itself. It should work for xp.
You can also download easy transfer to your computer and use a usb cable connected to your laptop, just as you would a flash drive. The cable just allows you to skip a step in the sequence.
I've used easy transfer before. The previous version is on the xp cd. What it allows you to do, for example, is transfer all the email (.eml) messages AND settings from one outlook express client to another whereas to do something like that manually, would be a nuisance.
Both programs have to exist on each computer.
If however, you just need to transfer files, like excel or word, you wouldn't need this at all.
