If you configured a laptop with USB and your accessories are only USB, what is the problem?
If you want Firewire, you can get a PCMCIA card to give you Firewire support. -
If You plan on doing some video editing then You would really wanna have Firewire. And to be honest I would always go with the laptop with most possibilities, simply for the fact that You can always buy a USB-hub if You need one plugs

Firewire really is nice because it doesn't take any CPU resources, where USB does. However, for most things, USB will work fine.

Some ppls test the performance for USB(480mb/s) vs Firewire(400mb/s). Firewire have a stable transfer rate, whereas USB's transfer rate is up and down. If your loading data is big such as video or movie, probably firewire is a better choice. The firewire B can support up to 800mb/s, but another device still not support B version yet!!!
