Can someone recommend the best USB-powered adapter they've ever used for playing widescreen DVD movies via the DVD drive in their laptop when this adapter is connected between the laptop and the DVI or HDMI input on a 42"
(or larger) widescreen plasma or LCD TV? Any problems with the movie displayed on that big screen? With this device, would the quality of the DVD movie playback also depend on the power of the laptop’s processor? If so, the Lenovo T400 that I may order will have an Intel T9400 processor. Will that processor be powerful enough to prevent the adapter from generating artifacts or distortions during DVD movie playback? If you or someone you know has had VERY good results with a specific model adapter, please let me know. Thank you.

The GPU (Video Card) is far more important than the processor in terms of the image quality. If you want to upgrade your video output then you should think about going with the ATI card instead of upgrading the CPU. It will probably matter very little anyways since an both the integrated Intel GM4500 card an the lowest Core 2 Duo processor should be more than up to the task. I haven't heard good things about any USB video solutions, but if you're playing DVD movies most 42" do have a VGA input which should provide excellent video quality.

I don't understand what you mean by "USB powered". If all you're doing is outputting your display on a TV, all you need is the proper video cable (VGA, DVI or HDMI). Screen size does not affect processing power. Only resolution does.

    What the guy means is:

    - is there a USB-to-HDMI or USB-to-DVI adapter you guys can recommend to him? since most likely, his laptop only has VGA
    - he wants to use a laptop, the adapter, a DVI/HDMI cable, and a 42" TV to have a setup that plays DVD from the laptop and displays onto TV
    - if there is such an adapter, would having a better processor change anything such as less distortions, less static, etc?

But no, I doubt there is a USB-to-DVI/HDMI adapter available, and CPU won't affect much.

USB does not have near enough bandwidth (480 Mbps v. 3.9 Gbps of DVI) to transfer HD video like that. You're going to need a VGA to DVI cable if your laptop does not have a DVI or HDMI output.

As mentioned vga should do just fine.

I don't think you can go from vga to dvi, only the other way around?

I have one of the below usb to dvi adapters on order for another purpose, so will post up what it's like when I get it if you want?

Sure you can go from VGA to DVI but not in an inexpensive way as routing analog signals to digital is not made by a little converter as DVI to VGA.

For example a thing like this should work http://www.i-tech.com.au/products/22918_Aten_VC_160_VGA_to_DVI_converter_.aspx

But isn't there a VGA input on your TV? Because DVI is really not worth it if you have a VGA input on your TV as the picture won't do a difference as you're changing the VGA to DVI, wich will still be "VGA quality".

Or else why don't use TV-out (composite/S-video) from the laptop? (95% of the laptops has tv-out today?). And i'm sure the TV has one of those connections besides DVI. And will save you lots of troubles and money instead.
