I recently bought an T400 and was looking for an ultraslim SATA DVD Writer. I am finding that an Dell e6400 DVD writer is cheaper than T400 DVD writer(almost half the cost).

Are 9.5mm SATA DVD writers standard? Can i just buy a Dell one and then replace the front bezel from my current IBM T400 drive?

PPl are using the Lenovo T400 optical bay caddy in their Dell E6400/E6500 as shown here. Some nice photos of the Dell optical drive for you to compare against. You'll find the unit is a 9.5mm SATA optical drive with custom faceplates to suit the specific system. The Dell E6400 faceplate right corner cutout allows for installation of an ejector mechanism as shown here.
