You do realize of course that this is nothing.
They have the ability to pack far more advanced tech into laptops, but because of profit margins and market demands, it's not being done.

It's powerful by today's standard, but the fact they probably already have something that will stomp this in 2 years time (lining up probably for the next 10 years) it's actually quite sad ... and overpriced to boot.

    Deks, surely you jest?

Just like us, they use the computers/tools that are currently available to make the future's 'wonder products'.

They may be playing with something that looks like out of Star Wars to you and me, but trust me, they're not getting any work done with it - they're simply squashing the bugs so that we can enjoy it asap.

    heatpipes...Heatpipes...HEATPIPES!!! And I'm guess 3-5 fans...

It won't run as cool as a desktop, but I don't find this impossible...if they can get a nuclear reactor on a submarine, they can get dual GTX480m's and a i7 980X in a laptop ;)

I have to wonder if they mean it will get 1hr battery idling? And of course the real simple question for the whole thing... why?

Remember though that the 980x is a gulftown processor and is made on a 32nm process, unlike the quad core i7's. Its six cores use the same power at the same clockspeeds as a quad core 45nm chip.

lol loved that.. but i think antartica might be the only place u can use it without getting burnt.

still in the D900F it used to be quite hot.. with the 480M SLI , i can't imagine the temps unless they put 5 fans in the notebook.

ur power bill wouldn't be that nice... for the amount of power this would suck and how much it would weigh , it would be better to build a desktop.

Some of the top end machines from MYSN have the option to have the desktop Hexacore processors, this one even seems to have the option to have some of the Xeon processors (confused!). Only one GTX480m though :p

But with power savings you'll never make up for the difference in price of a comparable desktop.

So would a single desktop GTX 480 blow away this config?

Read: Yes. :) Especially a desktop worthy of having a GTX 480. Granted this does have an SLi setup, but I'd expect the desktop could still outperform it.

    Desktop GTX 480: 480SP's -- 384bit Memory Bus -- GDDR5 -- 48 ROP's -- Faster clocked than mobile

    Mobile GTX 480: 352SP's -- 256bit Memory Bus -- GDDR5 -- 32 ROP's -- Slower Clocks than desktop

The mobile cards are a lot slower than the desktop version. 425 vs 700Mhz. Also remember that you can overclock desktop components to your heart's content (and how good your cooling is), something not readily done on a laptop. At stock clocks, the desktop card is a bit more than twice as powerful as a single mobile card. A desktop would blow this laptop away.
