    Hi,

My girlfriend has a Toshiba Satellite M40 notebook with a 128mb ATI Radeon X300 gfx card.. The thing keeps overheating and shutting down.. I have set the ATI Powerplay to Optimal Battery Life to try and turn the card down so it does not get so hot but it isn't making much of a difference. She only uses it to surf the web so doesn't need the card running at full power.. Can I under clock the card so it generates less heat?

If so how do I go about doing this?

If all else fails I will have to strip it down and give it a good clean inside but not something I really fancy doing.. :(

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Cheers
    Tom

it has nothing to do with the GPU, it's overheat due to internal dust-built.

Try compressed air first, or an air compressor.
Do not try and take it apart if this is your first laptop you have taken apart.
Toshiba builds their laptops so the consumer will have a hard time taking them apart. This is done to build a stronger laptop, and one which an idiot cannot screw up. Most will give up before getting it apart.
I have taken apart a good share of toshiba's and they are a pain to service and clean. The placement of ribbon cables and cables makes it very hard to disassemble and reassemble.
Take picture so you know how to put it back together.

    Good luck

You can also try undervolting the processor in order to cut the temperatures.
This only works with turion and core based processors, and the pentium M.

NHC (notebook hardware control) has special power-down options for ATI gpu's you might wanna check it out.
