    Hello guys,

Okay, I want to downlock my RAM so I can overclock my CPU (fsb) futher. The problem is, I can read my RAM correctly, but when I make changes, like setting the mhz to 400 or 500, my laptop won't startup. BUT after write, CPU-Z reads correct mhz. My Samsung sticks are dead, I don't know why, they did not work today after sitting for a while.

I have 2 set of RAM sticks available.

G.SKILL 1333Mhz and Kingston 1333Mhz. Both don't take any modification..

Is there something I'm missing here?

    I'm following this 'guide' http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/576475-how-update-spd.html

    Any ideas would be great!

Did you set a new checksum after changing parameters in SPD?
If not, it may be a reason. In this case, you can put your RAM stick into a laptop that does not check the checksum when booting. For DDR1 I know one of those laptops is Dell X300, for other types of RAM I don't have information.

I can get my laptop working again after makeing my RAM 'unusable' as I hotplug it and flash it. But, I'll try to set the checksum! Thanks for your reply! REP added.

I think you should stick to standard values; i.e. 667MHZ, 800MHZ or 1066MHZ since those are the only one supported by the Intel Chipset.

Not all chipset/bios combinations support writing to ram SPD and not all ram supports the SPD being swizzled regardless of the toolset being used.

Yep, I'm keeping my sticks at 1066mhz. I'm only getting black screens, apart from that 333mhz did work, but however.

If you are trying to OC the FSB you need the stock speed but at relaxed timings. If the ram originally was cas7 at 1066 you want to try 1066 but at cas 9. Usually at the rated speed there is a class of say A-E where a is the fastest JDEC cas and E being the slowest. Set your class down one or so and you should be set.

This is assuming you can even change the settings...................

My sticks are orginally 1333Mhz, here is the problem, they won't take any change at FSB. My orginal 1066mhz sticks are going up to 1333Mhz FSB tou. Wired, but true.

What were the original and neew sticks? Ususally 1333 cas 9 sticks at 1066, where C2D runs them, defaults out as cas 7. Just because you raise the FSB doees not get the new 1333 mhz sticks to run at the slower cas9. Truth be told the older 1066 sticks are usually better at overclock as not just the cas but oth4r timings are looser.

You may be better off finding a 1066 mhz profile that will run at cas9. Even copying the original sticks SPD settings may do. Here though lies another issue, not all ram run true JDEC profile timings and may need to be tweaked.

As it is with a desktop bios that supports it setting timing for ram FSB tweaking can be fun. Doing this with permanent SPD writes is a great way to end up with dead sticks. As you have seen some sticks out the door just will not FSB overclock, just the nature of the beast................

    Okay,
my latpop was shipped with 4GB 1066Mhz. Those were CL7, to overclock, I went from 7-7-7-20 to 7-8-8-26. I also had to lower my multiplier to 10,5x because else it would crash anyways. That gave me a (not stable overtime) overclock of 3.49Ghz.

But, now, I can't do the same with 1333Mhz modules (downclocked to 1066mhz by chipset). I get a black screen. Any ideas? I may buy 1066Mhz sticks, but I have thrown so much money in this laptop now. Just bought a new replacement parts for the areas where it was wearn out. Also, my GPU is dying, it is randomly crashing at up/downclock.

Here is another user with same laptop but with another issue.

Well, I'm not going to give up that easy! The temp issue is solved, I have the and scratches for a second fan.

As I said, I might offer a X9100 for all of you 5739G owners to test it out. You never know what I have in my head :)

Lolol. forget what I said. I was playing BF2 earlier. I forgot how much I love that game. Bad Company 2 runs so much smoother than CodBO. Much better than COD. cant wait for BF3. Im confident that i can play BF3 pretty good so Im gonna preorder BF3. $45 at some places.
Also Im gonna stick with this computer for another year. Then when Bulldozer comes, I will build a desktop.

desktop are out of question for me as I move so much around the city and world.

What I wonder at this point, does your FSB still run at 1333mhz?

I have no clue how that can be your case. But that is better? I'll boot up my hp now with t9600 and 800mhz 8gb ram to see how it does. But my t9600 is running at 2.93ghz.

By the way, have you tried a clean install? Also restore your bios settings to default.

Yea I did clean install installed acer bios. Same thing with RAM. CPU sometimes jumps to 2.93ghz if it wants. but most of the time around 2.8ghz.
