Hi, I got a really odd hybrid laptop / desktop computer see picture below. Anyways, I need to upgrade its video card. So was wondering what is the most powerful card with low power draw? (the psu on the hybrid is 500w) it takes a desktop type pcie 16x graphics card (currently its on a old nvidia 440). Since its pretty cramped for space need a cool card I measured the case it can take a 680 but heat and power is another issue. That said, whats a good card to use (money a non issue) and whats is the cards laptop counterpart in performance? Thanks.
PS here are a few pics:

Lol that's one of the strangest things i ever saw.
It's custom built? Or they sell it somewhere? Model name?
Anyway you could think about a gtx670 or an amd radeon 7870, but your need to change your psu dude.
500w is super low for high end cards, you need at least 650w. -

Equivalent to desktop 670 are gtx 680m and hd7970m.
But since you can have a desktop card in it, remember that those cards are still more powerful giving the ability of OC that they has.
The desktop 670 is almost on par with 680 and it's fairly cheaper.
Definitely the way to go. -
Look at the pictures. It's a custom hack job.
What are the system specs? Also measure how much space there is for the card, like it's maximum length. -
If it is a custom job I certainly did not do it, called imperial pc they verified that they made the computer. I have a spare gtx 580 and I barely managed to fit it in, of course a 500w is not enough for that card and then there is the heat issue since space is limited. Specs are
Intel i7 870 2.9ghz quad core processor
4gb ram
1.5tb hard drive
Asus P7P55D-E LX motherboard
Nvidia gt 440 graphics card
TV tunner card
17" TFT screen
Windows 7 Ultimate with disk and COA
Blu-ray drive -
get a 7850. it draws 150W max on load.
-
lol, that's a new one for me
... so the main parts go behind the monitor, and the keyboard part is the one that opens up ? I could bet that this must have been russian made, lol. -

A GTX580 would not be too much for a decent 500W supply.
However the HD7850 is a good choice. -
I have a gtx 580 on hand (actually two but anyways) but i know they run hotter than the new cards. Also it the card can only have one external power plug as the current psu does not have two.
PS whats a laptop equivalent for the desktop gtx 580 or gtx 680? (I have two of each right now, in the process of getting rid of the "old" 580's) Its hard to compare as even though the laptop cards have the same number of cores they're core clock speed is less and memory speed is less than a third of their desktop counterpart. IE gtx 680 memory speed is 6008 vs 1800 on a gtx 680m bandwidth of ~200gb/s vs around ~110 on the mobile, don't know how much they impact performance, if I'm going to carry this thing around might as well make it as powerful as I can to justify it.
And yes, the main parts are behind the monitor, the keyboard folds up to the monitor like a normal laptop. -
PSU wattage doesn't mean jack crap! Amperage is where it's at. that said you may actualy want a 600-650watt QUALITY power supply.
EDIT: Also that REALLY looks OEM, i see no cutting or tool marks and every thing seems molded and stamped to fit. -
So now the toss up is between the gtx 580 or a 6990, main concern is heat.
PS, yes it is oem, the builder's websit is here Home under portable LCD, don't know why they did not update it with i7 specs. It appears they are a GSA vendor for the government. -
The new Kepler cards don't draw a lot of power. The 500w PSU may be sufficient. What is the CPU?
-
Isn"t the 6990 a really LONG card?

I keep saying that gtx 670 should be a perfect fit, size wise, performance wise and power-draw wise.
It can reach 680 performance without an hitch while being far cheaper.
And it's still a bit above current high end mobile cards such 680m and 7970m.
Or go for the 7950, same thing applies. -
AFAIK the 7750 is the fastest current GPU without requiring auxiliary power. Fully powered by a 16x PCI-e slot and runs off a 28nm die. Got one in my extreme $350 budget build and it runs like a champ.
-
Only issue with the 670 is that it requires two aux connectors, not sure about the 7950. My current psu has only one. If i end up changing my psu then I'll most likely use the 7950 as ati is usually cheaper and delivers the same performances.
If I keep the current psu then I'm probably stuck with one that is under 500w requiring only one aux power connector. -
I've never seen these systems before and they are quite interesting. I initially missed what you said about them not updating with i7 specs and was wondering why they were offering a 1.44 mb floppy drive. -
Honestly I do not know what practical use is there for something like this, i guess its very upgradable and semi portable in a sense but high end laptops can match or surpass it it in speed (unless i get a second gen i7 extreme or something where I'm sure a laptop equivalent would not compare) unless of course someone needs desktop class graphics cards on the move or something.
Oh well, in a few days the 6990 will get here, i'll see if it fits, if it does, i'll change the psu and in it goes, if not, i'll probably leave the psu as it is and get maybe a 7850 which should be pretty close to the top of the line laptop cards. -
Wow, that is one Frankentop. I'd rather tote my Shuttle SFF PC with a monitor than that beast, lol.
-
Thanks for posting this because like I said, it's quite interesting and isn't something you see everyday. Who knows, maybe that system will satisfy someone's needs. -
Ok, the 6990 is not going to fit, actually bought a bunch of cards (2 5850, 4 5830, 2 5870 and 2 6990 from a former bitcoin minner), a standard 5870 would fit so I guess thats going in for now as the psu is only 500w (keep in mind it also have to supply power to the monitor too).
