Tried too hard and lost the threading completely on the screw head while trying to remove the hard drive cover for my HP notebook. Took it Best Buy and Staples but got no help. Any ideas? Thanks.

Try using a larger head screwdriver. Also, and this may sound counter-intuitive, but if the screw has been in place for a long time, try tightening the screw slightly first then attempt to remove it. By tightening first then unscrewing, this "breaks" the screw's hold which should allow an easier time getting the screw out.

If you have a dremel rotary tool, use a cutting head, and make a notch in the top of the screw, so that you can use a flat head screwdriver to remove it.

Try using a small wire cutter, clamp down on one edge then turn.

    cheers ...

That's very true, but at the same time, you'll need a really strong magnet really close to your HDD before you do any sort of damage. I'd say household magnets and the like are probably find; heck there are already quite a few laptops out there with magnets keeping lids shut and the like...
