I have been using my 920xm recently for video encoding for hours on end and have been testing the limits of it and so far haven't got to them yet

So far I have gone as far as 24x133mhz which is 3.2ghz across all 4 cores with HT enabled and the chip only demands 83/60 tdp+tdc to remain stable. Moreover with such a low tdp my temps stay under 90C.

Is this normal? Or do I have an unusually highly binned product. I say this as I read everywhere that people cannot sustain even 3ghz across all cores let alone above! Here is a screenshot showing current encode which is full 1080p to push the cpu nicely. Ambient temp is 20C and the laptop is slightly propped up at back for a more comfortable typing position.

Should I be worried pushing this hard or not?

Temp or clock speed. For the temp it is really low! Try pushing a 920xm to 3.2ghz x4 with HT enabled at 100% load for a few hours lol if you can maintain the clockspeed. I idle in the 30s or 40s

Just for reference with 26.5 C ambient, my 920XM on stock speeds gets up to that temperature if I run Prime95 or a really intensive application.

You might have gotten lucky with a very good unit in regards to overclocking. As long as the temps are ok, i wouldn't worry.

That is really impressive. I can't get close to that under 90C or in that power setting.

Really!? Even with a 940xm! I played around yesterday some more and pushed to 25x for laughs it did it with 87W tdp 60W tdc. I don't find tdc makes any difference to any OC.

At these settings the temps went up about 2-3C across all cores. so still under 95C. Interesting how a ES can clock so well. Perhaps they binned it highly and gave it a good testing!

I do wonder at the efficiencies about the processor though when operating at 90C + would a lower clockspeed with lower temp be just as powerful?

you've disabled BD ProcHot. Watch out.

for really loading the CPU, LinX is Intels own testing software, try it.

I didn't disable it or enable it. It simply came like that. I have just read up about it and it doesn't sound important. Simply if the gpu is running too hot then the cpu will downclock. I always monitor temps and also on the M15x the gpu's fans oddly kick in quite high when the cpu is under load so the GPU will never overheat. In games I would set the gpu fans to high anyways not that I play them these days.
