I recently saw the clock speeds of the long overdue Broadwell quad core processors:

I remember reading quite a number of articles proclaiming how the improvements posed by Broadwell quad cores were not enough to make Broadwell worth buying. That, plus the high initial price and looming Skylake release, makes it a deal breaker compared to 4th generation processors.
But the clock speed increase to 3.3 GHz seems to be pretty substantial. I don't want to fall prey to the megahertz myth, but the original megahertz myth was applicable because of differentiating architectures. Assuming that the architecture works equally well for both the 4th generation and 5th generation, does that mean a 27% increase in processing power?
If Broadwell really was that bad, with so few improvements... why release it at all, especially with Skylake coming anyways?
I've been researching to buy a laptop for a while now, waiting patiently for the right moment. But now that my current computer has become totally unusable, it's time for me to make a decision. In the end, I'll probably still go for the i7-4720HQ purely for price (price is why I haven't mentioned Skylake much), but I still want to know how much I am missing out on.

clock speed increase? Where? That's desktop chips.
Broadwell is crap. It's not in notebooks because intel skipped it as best they could because it yielded basically no benefits, and only downsides.
Ignore broadwell. Broadwell is likely never coming to mobile quadcore CPUs.
Skylake will be the next architecture.
Also, read my mobile i7 CPU guide. You appear to not know anything about mobile CPUs if you're comparing base clock to base clockDamage___, Papusan and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
I don't really understand the letter system too much, and I guess in my search for a laptop with either desktop or mobile CPUs, I dun derped.
Skylake's probably going to come too late for me, unfortunately. Thanks for your help!
P.S. Actually, I did come across your guide earlier. It was really helpful and I'm glad you uploaded it.
I'm still a noob though.D2 Ultima likes this.
