Hey, does anyone know if there are any upcoming hard drives in the works that are really thin (less than 9mm/0.354 inches in height but are bigger than 500GB?

Seagate is coming with high performance Momentus XT 7mm drive in the fall time, but not sure if gonna be higher than 500GB. I have been also looking for higher density HDD than 500GB/platter in 2.5".

500GB is pretty great, but if a 640 or a 750 - or even larger - drive is on its way, its really pointless to buy a 500GB one right now

Does not compute OP. HD drives are standardized. What would you want it for?

Exactly, I don't want to sand down or otherwise physically modify my Lenovo x220

Yeah, I wish they would have went with the 9.5mm drive on the X2x0 ThinkPads, but they didn't ask me. I haven't heard of any upcoming larger drives. Since there's only one platter, they'd need to bump up the platter density. I'd guess 640GB or 750GB would be the next step whenever they come.
