I have a Crucial M4 as my primary drive and the stock 500GB HD in the optical bay (Alienware M14x) and I am about to do a clean install of W7...however in the past I have tried to update the HD's firmware and it just messes up Windows and I have to use Bootrec.exe and use commands like /FixMBR etc...I think because it is trying to update the firmware to the SSD not the HD...is there a way to update the firmware without taking the SSD out and then putting the HD in the primary bay? Or should I just leave the current firmware on the HD since it is just used for storage?

If it ain't broken, don't fix it. Leave the FW on the stock drive alone imo.

Agreed. That is, unless you have some pressing need that would improve efficiency? Otherwise, it probably won't matter.

Okay I will leave it alone then..thanks a lot!

The only reason to upgrade i can think of is a Momentus XT 500Gb that is on pre SD28 formware and SD28 FW has been around for a long time now.
Updating Secondary HD Firmware?
