Hi, I'm thinking of upgrading the processor in my Asus K50ID laptop from a T4400 to the T9600. The 2.2Ghz T4400 has a 800Mhz FSB and the 2.8Ghz T9600 has a 1066Mhz FSB. That's basically the only major difference I could pick up.

After googling online a bit I found that my laptop should support the following CPU's:

    P8800/P8700/P7450/T6670/T6570/T5900

Now the P8800 and P8600 are also 1066Mhz FSB cpus so the T9600 should also work in the laptop? Plus the T9600 and T4400 are 35W and the P8800/P8700 are 25W so they have even less in common than the T9600.

The chipset is the: nVidia MCP79D Mobile Chipset. Laptop specifications are as follows:

ASUS® K50ID Series ASUS K50ID-SX103R Home Series Notebook
    Intel Pentium Dual Core T4400 2.2GHz 800MHz FSB 1M L2 Cache
    2048MB DDR3-1066 SO-Dimm Memory (1x2048)
    320GB SATA 5400rpm Hard Drive
15.6" WXGA HD Color Shine LED (1366x768 resolution) TFT LCD Display
nVidia Geforce GT320M with 1GB dedicated graphics
8 X Super Multi Writer optical drive
    802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN
    10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN
    Bluetooth
    0.3MP Webcam
    6 cell battery
    Full Keyboard

In theory it should work...the main problem could be the BIOS support, the only way to be sure however is to try it.

I`m also interested in upgrading the CPU.

Can you tell me if it works.

    I will do it too.

my gues is that u have PM45 Chipset for sure... that supports T9600 easily.. also anothe reason i think it is so is because of DDR3 RAM.. T9600 should work.. try it out.. but just before u upgrade , update ur BIOS to latest version.

Ok, I've managed to get hold of a 3.06Ghz T9900 cpu. Do you think that this will work in the laptop?

Probably will work. If it doesn't, at least it wont do any damage so you can feel free to try it.

    Should work. I have never seen a PM45 chipset rejecting a T9900... I did a similar upgrade too. T9400 -> T9900

it should work 95%... but if u have a PM45 chipset i really don't see how it cannot ever work.

It worked! No hassles and laptop immediately detected the T9900. I did update to the latest BIOS before swapping out the cpus but it probably was not needed. Running the cpu and gpu at the following. Stable with furmark and prime95 running simultaneously. Love this laptop.

Your laptop should be a lot more snappier right now. T4400 to T9900 is a great upgrade!

Actually the CPU is maxed out at 100% with the two games I tested which is why I overclocked to see the difference. All max details. Dragon Age and Mass Effect. That's at 3.4Ghz as well. The GPU load sits at around 80% to 90% probably because of the huge 25% to 30% overclock. I suppose on more graphically demanding games the GPU will be the bottleneck. Either way, gameplay is smooth as butter :)

I overclocked using the Nvidia Control Panel. Both the CPU and GPU. Was pretty easy to do. Didnt' have to use setFSB etc.. and the overclock remains after reset as you can specify it to load certain clocks when windows boots, when gaming, etc.

Hello. I see that T9600 works in K50ID. I wonder if T9400 will make it. Technically, clocks are the main difference (2,8 vs 2,53). Has anyone tried it?
T9600 is hard to find here in Poland :(

On ebay, T9600 costs $150 + delivery, while in PL the price of T9400 is around 90-100$

So I got my K50id about 2 weeks ago. I put a T9600 in there and oc'd it to 3.0Ghz and undervolted it. Under full load it get around 80 degrees max. Is that acceptable?

Can you guys post your temps underload while playing games.

My 320m GT hits around 70-80 degrees as well while gaming, the thermal pad got screwed so I used a copper shim with thermal paste on either side.

Why didnt Asus make a vent right under the fan?

    I will ship internationally ;)

but seriously... isn't this Nvidia chipset not only overclockable via system tools, but also with a BSEL pinmod on the cpu? a t9300 would then be 266x12.5=3.3ghz

^ Not sure, I've only used Nvidia system tools and bumped my fsb to 300x10.0 for 3.0GHz
