    Hello everyone,

I'm planning to upgrade my Inspiron 1720s from 2GB to 4GB. I found out that the best place to buy memory at is newegg.com and i saw that they have some pretty deals going on..

    I found 2x2GB G.Skill Memory with CAS4 latency:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231154

I was wondering if my inspiron can handle this cas4 latency, since its coming with memory with cas5..

    anyone any experience with this?

    thanks in advance,

    bart

Is 2GB of RAM not good enough?

yeah im aware of that, even though vista sp1 will show the 4GB, im fully aware that only like 3.2GB will be used..

But the question was if the laptop will run this CAS4, and if it can handle the cas4 latencies, since theres not a lot of DDR2 667MHz with CAS4 latencies...

yes it will run, latency isnt a requirement spec like PC5300 or DDR2 RAM

alright, bought the memory and it works perfect!

the weird thing is that it shows all the 4GB thats in there,,, and im running vista x86..

Is that because im running SP1?
Does it use the whole 4GB>?

That is because Vista SP1 reports the amount of memory installed...you can still only use 3-3.25GB of it.

Have you verified the actual timing with CPU-Z? http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
Which chipset do you have? The timing and the chipset are shown at SPD and Mainboard tab respectively.

hha yeah, forgot to tell that, it runs perfectly on 4-4-4-12, also runs in dual channel and the DC Mode is set on symmetric.

And its also looking like the battery is holding out longer, even though i upgraded..

The weirdest thing is that my memory WEI score is unchanged, it's still at 4.8 which doesn't make a lot of sense to me..

I've got a brand new 1720 that came with 4gb, it too shows as a WEI score of 4.8 and uses 3.5 gb of the memory.

I am glad that it worked for you. I also have the same memory on my way. Let's see if it would work with my Sony FZ4000 CTO.

Incidentally, which chipset do you have? Mine is Intel GM965.

When I upgraded to 3GB from 2GB in my laptop the WEI score for memory didn't go up until I had run the assessment a couple of times over a three day period. It might be that the score is done over time.

Im getting ready to buy a 1720.......my question is ....... if I get Vista Business or Ultimate.....will my computer be 64bit??? And will it use the whole 4GB of RAM

I have been told that u use the 4GB of RAM with 64bit..... but that if you didn't have the right processor and motherboard then you'd still only be 32bit even with vista business or ultimate......so now I'm confused.....PLEASE HELP

Will I have a 32bit or 64bit system if I buy a 1720 with Vista Business or Ultimate????

I also bought an inspiron 1720 with 4 gigs of ram some programs i run show that it uses any where from 3.25 to 3.5 however before i installed sp1 on vista the system only showed 3.5 now it shows 4.0; and my WEI score is 5.1 for memory.

cktb2793 to answer your question and dont quote me because i am not 100% positive but i am almost that positve! but if you just ordered your inspiron 1720 it should come with the 32 bit operating system of what ever level of vista you choose, the business and ultimate editions just give you extra/enhanced programs.

I just had a 1720 and returned it. Yes, it will support 64-bit (with a bit of driver downloading - but they are all out their and all but the nVidia driver is on the Dell site somewhere), but it is shipped with 32-bit. You will have to upgrade to 64-bit on your own - with a Vista 64-bit disk. If you stay with 32-bit, you will only use a little over the 3gb as stated earlier in this thread.

hendra - just sent you a PM.
