Ok, I have a C650-ST2NX2 Toshiba with Windows 7 Home Prem x64 with a P6100 processor, HM55 Express Chipset, Mobile Intel HD Graphics with 64mb-1696mb. I want to upgrade the processor to an I7-640M processor because I believe that is as fastest processor I can install with the Integrated Graphics. I think I need to buy one with Integrated Graphics, right? That is my first question. Next what kind of problems can I expect, heat maybe, what kind of paste should I use between the processor and heat sink for the best contact? The I7-640M has two cores same as the P6100 I am replacing. Can I go to a 4 core processor? If I can the ones I have found that are compatible all are without the Integrated Graphics. I thought the IG might be needed, but that is what I need to find out from you experts. My warranty has expired and to talk to Toshiba they want $50. Hope there is someone out there that can help me figure this all out. Thanks.

For most uses, the hard drive speed is much more likely to make your system seem faster than the CPU. You might want to look into a faster drive or SSD if you want a speed boost.

If you have HM55 and integrated graphics, you cannot go the quad cores, as Clarksfield quad core i7's do not have graphics on die. You can only go the high clocked dual core i7's which are a waste of money over an i5. Again as ZaZ has stated, RAM and CPU have almost no bearing on boot speed, it is disk bottleneck.

I bought a used I5-580M Processor and installed it using Arctic Silver 5 Thermal paste. It ran hot at 185 deg F for a very short time and then dropped down to 153 deg F, then on down to 129 deg F where it is running now. This CPU is twice as fast and has 4 threads instead of 2 as the P6100 I had in the laptop. I see a difference in speed as well as now I don't get the message from Norton 360 anymore that my CPU usage is high. I ordered a SSD and it will arrive Wednesday and that should speed up the boot-up and shutdown time as well as loading programs on the hard drive. I already had 4 gb of memory in it and that is all that Toshiba can see in this computer from everything I have read. I'll update this when I get the new Solid State Hard Drive in.
