Upgrade CD-ROM

I need to upgrade my CD-Rom drive to a DVD Burner for a HP dv1000. This is possible correct? The reason I need to do this is to burn off the system restore discs using only one DVD-r instead of using 11 CD-r's

 

If that's your only reason...perhaps consider an external unit as well?

But I'd look in the HP sub-forum, as you'll need to make sure you choose one that will accept the face plate for your optical drive bay. They aren't standardized on laptops, there are several different configurations. Even though any slim line drive will probably physically fit in there, the plastic cover over it might not line up for the eject button or even connect to the drawer.

 

Is there a difference between "Slim" and "ultaslim"? And do you know how to even get the drive out. I've no clue.

 

Look for the service manual on HP's site. It will explain how to dismantle you laptop.

 

Probably, different model have a different case and size, i believe that the drive still the same, but the "mounting kit" or cover is different. A better way is to contact their technicial support first, may be they know this with a good idea how to upgrade it.

 

This is why I'd ask that in the HP forum. You'll find someone there who has experience with your model.

 

I don't think Slim and Ultra Slim are brand specific.

 

But getting the drive out can be. That's what I was referring to.

 

Ah ha, sorry for the confusion. I also talked with HP support and they said their drives are coming configured so you are not able to remove the optical bay, and if you do you risk your warranty. Can anyone else confirm that this is where optical drives are headed?

 

I agree. This is what I did when I upgraded my combo drive to a dvd writer. It was pretty easy to do. Swaping the drives took maybe 15 mins. I also agree with HP support that it will risk your warranty. For me, it does not matter since I kept the old drive and can put it back in case I need to send my laptop for service.

I see issues with this though. Your notebook optical drive goes out. You send it in for service. Are they going to throw out the whole casing and place your motherboard/parts in a new case and attach your LCD to it?

Seems to be adding a bunch of work. This makes me think they are going more the direction of 'making it very hard for an end user to remove/replace/service'.

I don't know that they'd shoot themselves in the foot that way. It kind of reminds me of the days of proprietary memory by many desktop makers

 

Except that it's probably much, much cheaper for them in both parts and assembly. Optical devices are much more reliable now, too. Failure rates are really low...possibly low enough that increased costs on repairs in that situation, wouldn't overcome the potential savings by cheaper assembly/parts.

It is also the same service manual for the V2000 and NX4800. For more info, try searching this forum. I remember someone posted how they upgraded the optical drive on their V2000 a while back. If I remember correctly, this laptop uses a standard 12.7mm optical drive.
