I have a Dell 1705/9400 with the Intel T2400 1.83Ghz (Core Duo). I'm wondering if I can upgrade the processor to a higher one, say the T2700 2.33Ghz processor. Along with that come some questions: How much faster ( %, feel, whatever) would that extra .5Ghz be? You can't tell by clock speed any more like you could with the Pentium processors. Are there other processors in this family or another that would work also?

I edit HD video, and every bit of processor speed, RAM and hard disk speed is beneficial. If I could afford it, I'd buy a $7,000 laptop, but I can't. If a couple hundred will add, say, 30% more speed, then I CAN do that...

    TIA,

    Hawkeye Poole

You can upgrade to the merom core 2 duo cpus (t7200, 7400, 7600). In the line of work you do, you will see quite a benefit especially with the faster cpus and more cache.

A Core 2 Duo sounds like it would be a beneficial upgrade for you, but you should search for some guides on replacing the processor before you do it. Some laptops are fairly complicated.

Also, upgrading the processor will void your warranty so be warned.

I can partially answer my own question: It seems the Intel Core 2 Duo will work with many, but not all Core Duo systems. You need to know a little about your motherboard, and an upgrade to the bios may be required. You'll need a 945GM or 945PM chipset for compatibility.

The question remains, if I buy, say the T7600 2.33Ghz Core 2 Duo, how much faster is that than the T2400 1.83Ghz Core Duo? I'm looking for benchmarks, but haven't found any relevant ones, yet.
