I want to upgrade the RAM, there are two slots. (I'm looking at 4GB, 800MHz)
I want to upgrade the CPU, to something that will make a difference.
I want to upgrade the hard disk to an SSD.
These are a selection of CPU's
T8300, 2.4 GHz, FSB 800 MHz, L2 3 MB
T9300, 2.5 GHz, FSB 800 MHz, L2 6 MB
T9500, 2.6 GHz, FSB 800 MHz, L2 6 MB
X7800, 2.6 GHz, FSB 800 MHz, L2 4 MB
X7900, 2.8 GHz, FSB 800 MHz, L2 4 MB
X9000, 2.8 GHz, FSB 800 MHz, L2 6 MB
I would like to upgrade to a X9100, 3.06GHz, FSB 1066 MHz, L2 6M.
Many Thanks Guys.

Go for a T9500 instead because the Sony can't handle the additional heat output due to insufficient cooling solution. Make sure you're using high quality TIM (ICD, Kryonaut or GC Extreme) and thermal pads (FujiPoly 11w/mk).
With 4GB RAM and a SSD you should see a major improvement in performance!

I generally agree with upgrading to an SSD drive. As for upgrades to CPU and RAM I would like to ask: What do you use the computer for?
If you can find some cheap RAM I think it would be worth it. As for CPUs, I just think that they can be a bit finicky to upgrade in some laptops.rebel11 likes this. -

In that case, I don't think your laptop chipset supports the X9100 with a 1066MHz FSB. If you think your computer can handle the heat then the T9500 should work as @CaerCadarn suggested.

Yup, the T9300 looks like a good option. Plan to spend as little as possible. If you need anything to do with YouTube/video/multimedia, many current budget laptops will have specs that smash a Core 2 Duo out of the water even at the same clockspeed.

Installed Samsung 2X 2GB 2Rx8 PC2-6400S DDR2 800Mhz CL6 200pin SODIMM RAM Laptop Memory, BIOS recognises it.

I have this - Toshiba MK1234GSX installed - https://www.cnet.com/products/toshiba-mk1234gsx-hard-drive-120-gb-sata-150-series/specs/
I'm replacing it with - Toshiba - Q300 - https://www.toshiba.eu/Contents/Toshiba_teg/EU/Others/HDD_datasheets/SSD_Q300_Datasheet.pdf
Can anyone see any issues? -
The Q300 isn't exactly one of the best performing SSDs, though I am sure it is better performing than any conventional rotating HDD. Any 2.5" SATA SSD should work. If you aren't getting the Q300 for any particularly amazing price, you could consider other SSD drive models.

You might be able to get something better. Search up the models and compare: e.g. http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Search?searchTerm=q300

What capacity are you buying?
That is a very low end SSD and it has very inconsistent performance. Depending on your workload; it may stutter and pause on you making it feel like the system is 'frozen' for seconds at a time. Even if you OP* the SSD by a significant amount (25% or more).
If you can get any Crucial SSD that supports the Momentum Cache feature via Crucial's Storage Executive software, you won't be sorry.
*OP=over-provision; where you leave 'unallocated' capacity and free space on the drive to perform at it's peak level in sustained, over time, workflows.

If I can get a Samsung EVO 850, at a reasonable price then I'll get that.

Cancel Samsung Evo 850 too many fakes about, thinking of getting instead WD Western Digital Black WD3200LPLX 320GB.

The T9300 has arrived, the laptop came out in 2007, the T9300 came out in Q3 2008, Sony has a BIOS update that came out in September 2008. So do I need to update the BIOS?
Still haven't got a SSD, got my eye on Samsung or Plextor.Last edited: Jun 29, 2017 -
The BIOS version on the system is as follows, so the existing BIOS should be fine.
Date:
9/11/2008
Version:
R0231Q0
Size:
1.21 MB -
I've installed the ram and processor, but haven't used any termal paste yet on the processor. The BIOS has recognised the processor. Need to find either a SSD or Hybrid drive.

What's the website you're looking on for computer parts and how much space do you need?

Just Amazon and Ebay, I was thinking of 60GB, but a 120GB would do nicely.

imo, you're wasting your time with such low capacity/performance 'SSD's'.
Look for the highest capacity model you can afford. Even an M4 512GB from yesteryear would be better than anything 'TLC' based 'current' example.rebel11 likes this. -
That old adage,'if it's too good to be true, then it probably is'. I spotted a load of SSD Drives at crazy prices on Ebay. The sellers account had been hijacked by someone. I brought one. All the items disappeared. Then the hijacker listed a car for $19,000. I got hold of Ebay Chat, they told me to cancel the Paypal payment. All very strange.
I'm avoiding anything with TLC. O.K. I'll look for 120GB and 250GB.tilleroftheearth likes this.
