Okay - since you folks seem to be in the know here - I was telling a friend about upgrading my HDD and she asked if I could find a recommendation for her dell latitude d430. This is the small - lighter version of the latitude and she needs at lesat 120 gb and more if possible.
The Dell "chat" rep told her that the Latitude D430 and D610 and both use the same type of HDD interface which is the ATA-100 and the same drives - after he tried to sell her a SATA....
But - her d430 has a TOSHIBA MK6008GAH 60gb which according to the Toshiba website is a 1.8" not a 2.5 as the d610 drive is.
This is the Toshiba info

Am I missing something here?
Suggestions, recommendations? Thanks.

The hard drive in the D430 is indeed a PATA hard drive. It is a 1.8" PATA drive with a ZIF connector. You can use any other 1.8" PATA drive with a ZIF connector; they're actually more standardized that you'd think. I don't what the biggest 1.8" PATA ZIF drive out at the moment is; but I'm certain that you can get at least 120GB.

There are also more exotic solid state drives you can buy, though I think those max out at 64GB with regards to PATA/ZIF drives. Mtron is very good if you want to go down that path. -
No mechanical 1.8" drives are really a good alternative. All of them are very slow and very expensive.
Your best bet for performance is to get a M-TRON 3000 series SSD for it
K-TRON -
Same critique with this one too - slow?
Toshiba 120GB ATA-7 ZIF 1.8" Model# MK1214GAH
Sounding really stupid, but that is a M-tron 3000 SSD? -
It's faster than what she has, so it's a nice upgrade.
But the M-Tron is a solid state disk and it's a lot faster than that hard disk.
Samsung also makes 1.8" ATA SSDs. -
I looked up the M-tron and all the ones I found were small 16-32gb and expensive. My friend is looking for extra storage - she needs portable space for client records and music (she is a music therapist) - those are the priorities..
What is the model of the samsung 1.8 - do you know? thanks. -

That one looks to be the same in all respects to the original but runs at 5400 rather than the 4200 of the original toshiba. Is that a problem?
these guys are not easy to find, either. One site says discontinued, but the manuyfacturer's website doesn't say that...? -

1.8" HDDs are relatively difficult to find. This site lists many models (except Samsung) and may help you identify other suitable models.

thank you. I'll go take a look.
