My primary drive is quickly running out of space. I've gone from over 300GB to 152GB in less than 2 weeks. Steam has been absolutely ravaging my HDD and I still have more to come. Plus I have other stuff being added to it constantly. I'm running out fast and I'm looking for an upgrade. Obviously looking for space so no SSD's or anything like that.

What are some good high capacity 7200RPM hard drives? I've had games stutter and have issues on 5400RPM so I'd like to avoid that. 1TB is obviously the sweet spot I'm looking for but 750GB+ should be okay. Any help is appreciated.

there's a seagate 750GB drive which is 7200rpm i think.. i don't know if its in stock.. Since you have a G73 , why not get another 500GB drive and stick into your second slot even if you don't have the hard drive caddy? Tape does the job. I really can't think of anything else.

This would be the only drive that fits your criteria. No one has come out with a 7200 RPM 1 TB notebook drive (yet).

It may be worthwhile to change the location of some of your personal or system folders to your secondary drive, stuff like your Music or Videos folder.

And you can always just back up the steamapps folder to an external drive (or just your secondary drive), and delete the game data you aren't currently playing from your machine through steam. That way you won't be quite as squeezed for space.

But the drive saturnotaku linked to is nice, too ;)

I only see that 750 GB Momentus drive with 7200 rpm available. I don't see a noticeable difference between my 640 GB Scorpio Blue (5400 rpm) and my 320 GB Scorpio Black (7200 rpm) in all honesty.

Keep your 7200rpm drive for your OS and apps/games, then get a 1TB or 1.5TB 3-platter (12.5mm tall) hard drive for your secondary hard drive bay (If you have a secondary bay), and then another one in replacement of your CDROM drive with a caddy!

1.5TB 12.5mm tall 2.5" drives should be coming out pretty soon. Once 1TB 2-platter 5400RPM 9.5mm tall drives comes out, which should be pretty soon since we have 750GB@7200RPM.

Do you need more than 500GB for fast accessing? You could get 1 750GB @7200RPM and then 1 or 2 large capacity drives as discussed above (If they'll fit cus they are thicker).

the g73 cant take 12.5 mm drives in its second bay

but if you got one of those diy optical bay things from ebay, search diy odd caddy in this forum

you can put 12.5 mm drives in there. Until you get one you can only use 9.5 mm drives the largest atm is 750 gb

if its just your two bays, get an external case for your 2nd drive and then either get a 750 gb hd or jusst another 7200 500 gb hd like the one you have. newegg has them for 65

do you need all those games at the same time? what i love about steam is, i can just say "those games, get off my pc" and then get them back once i need them.

Really? That sucks, plus it's Seagate. I don't like Seagate drives, they've been bad to me in the past. Bleh.

I do that for the most part. My Primary only has my OS and my games/programs. I keep my music, videos, backups, files, everything else on the secondary. Only thing I don't do is the Steam thing. Question though: if I move the game to my Secondary, go to Steam and have Steam uninstall that game. What happens when I go move it back? Will Steam instantly recognize it and have it highlighted in my list again?

I had issues in all games where it would stutter for a quick second every minute or so, it was annoying. Switched to a 7200RPM drive and the issues resolved themselves.

And at the other two. I kind of like having Blu-ray at the fly so I don't really want to give that up, plus it's a lot of hassle and work to get that set up. It just seems easier to just get a big drive. I'm considering going for a larger Secondary but as of right now I don't need anymore space for it.

Yup. You just copy the relevant game folder back to the "steamapps" folder (and possibly the ncf file), and you're good to go. You might have a small download or something if it's been updated or whatnot, but much better than redownloading the entire game.

I actually do that so I can install the game on both my desktop and laptop with only one download.

I have the same capacity as you and im about 75% full.

Personally I would like my g73 to have 3.5 tb of capacity.

as soon as the 1tb 9.5 mm drives come to market ill get two of those and a 12.5 mm 1.5 tb hd.

Not quite as big as the seagate, but there is the Samsung HM640JJ Spinpoint MP4, which is a 7200 RPM 640 GB drive that's gotten some pretty nice reviews. That'll only add about another 130 or so GB to your current drive, though.
