    Hello,
I would like to max out my RAM on my laptop which is a...

    Vaio CR-190E

    with
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7100 (FSB is 800 i think and 1.8Ghz)
already have a 1 GB samsung stick in one slot but it has a maximum of 2 GB per slot (2 slots) of DDR2 PC2-6400 or DDR2 PC2-5300 dual channel.
Im also running Vista (32-bit I think)

I am unsure of what type of speed I should go with either the DDR2 PC2-6400 or DDR2 PC2-5300 i know that the 6400 is faster but by how much? Also Im not sure with 4GB of ram should I need to get a 64-bit os to utalize all 4GB or is it ok to keep the one I have? I have a budget of about $120.

    Thanks

Buy another 2gb pc5300 stick and be done with it. That will be by far the best configuration for you over the other options.

^^^ Yes. If you do above your OS will recognize the entire 3GB. To use the entire 4GB you do need a 64bit OS. PC6400 will funtion at the same speed as PC5300 in your system, will not run faster.

    Thank you,
Just two more questions. I plan to also max out my cpu later on are there versions of my cpu that would allow for PC6400 to run at a faster speed than PC5300? I can get a cheap version of vista 64-bit from my university do you think it would be worth it for the extra ram? I don't play pc games but do run a lot of apps and am work on high end video and sound editing.

Read what powerpack said, pc6400 ram will run at pc5300 speeds in your notebook, regardless of what cpu you have in there.
