I'm sure the answer is yes, but download and run CPU-Z to check the hardware.
The SPD page will tell you the details of your existing modules. There is a pull-down list to select slot 1 or slot 2.

What is the chipset on the mainboard page. Intel 945 and 965 can support up to 2GB modules, so if you have 2 slots then 4GB is your limit. The 915 chipset can only handle 1GB modules.

I know that my notebook can suport up to 2GB RAM, 2 slots and one slot can handle up to 1GB RAM but I don't know if can I put in one slot 512MB RAM and in other slot 1GB RAM. The chipset is intel 915.

You can definitely run with two modules of different sizes. However, I don't know how well the 915 chipset handles the assymetirc configuration (the later chipsets do fine as discussed here). With 1GB modules now very cheap, why not get 2 x 1GB? Is one slot relatively inaccesible?

I have thought to keep the 512MB RAM (if notebook has 512x1) and to get another 1GB RAM because I have thought to upgrade windows xp sp2 to windows vista for that i want to upgrade RAM. Do you think that it's better to get 2x1GB?

    Thank you John

Vista thrives on more RAM. However, the basic issue is how well the 915 chipset handles a pair of modules of different sizes. We are going back to a time when people said that you needed two identical modules to run dual channel (and hence get a useful speed boots in memory access). Maybe they were right for that generation of hardware. I can't remember and don't have access to something suitable to test.

Unless someone can pass by and give some first-hand knowledge on the 915 chipset, my suggestion would be to spend a little more money and get the 2 x 1GB.
