    Hey all!

I'm about to buy a DELL E1705 with an Intel Core Duo T2500 2.0 GHz...

will this be upgradable to the soon available Core 2 Duo?

And can I do it myself, or is it reaaaally hard to do (am used to build my own desktop machines, but have little experience with notebooks)?

This question has been asked a million times. If the BIOS supports the Core 2 Duo, then yes it can be upgraded. As for the e1705, I think it should be able to support Merom(or Dell might in the near future).

See the service manual for instructions and decide for yourself if you can do the upgrade(as you will need to completely disassemble the laptop to acess the cpu)...

No Problem. For the past few months lots of people have the same question. So, its become a bit repetitive for me. But I do apologise if I come across too harsh on you.

I see that you have replied to this thread here in the B/S/T forums...

The seller is selling a e1705 apparantly with Core 2 Duo(ES), so the BIOS might already be capable of supporting it.

I would say most Core Duo laptops on sale now will get the Core 2 Duo upgrade. I dont thik manufacturers would replace the whole thing just to put a new CPU(although it is a possibility) but I think largely any recent Core Duo laptop with 945 series chipset should be upgradable to Core 2 Duo

Good to know. Most manufacturers should be able to support Merom pretty easily and if they dont well thats just speaks of their lack of concern towards their customers.

hi, im a noob as far as the technicle stuff goes.
Im currently waiting for a gate nx860XL w/ 2 gigs of memory, 12 cell battery and the 2.16 processor..
What determines whether or not the BIOS will support the new core 2 duo? Is that something no one knows yet? or is it different for every pc?

    thanks

Yes it is different most computers, though some people have used BIOS from other companies(the Amilo with AW BIOS is an example). Some companies are interested in allowing customers to upgrade to Merom (HP).

Its fully upto the laptop manufacturers to support Merom and so will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Try contacting Gateway and see if they can give you a definate answer.
