Hi--
I'd like to upgrade my Gateway 450SX4 to a 100 gig drive.
Their site says that the max supported drive for my laptop is 60 gigs.
One of their upgrade sales/technician chat people said that my computer wouldn't recognize a larger drive at all. I asked her if it was because of a BIOS limitation, and she said "yes."
I really want to upgrade to a 100 gig drive. Does anyone know if Gateway's max supported drive limits are real? And if there is any way around it? Can I partition the drive or something?
I'd appreciate any help or advice on this.
Thanks,
Laura

Usually they don't lie about that kind of thing, if it has a limit of 60GB then that will be all that the bios will allow. About the only option that I can think of is to get the 100GB drive and get an external enclosure for it and use it like that, if you really need the storage space and you have space for the drive in your bag if you will be traveling with it alot. That would be the cheapest option and only one that I know will for sure work.

I would definently agree with Jenson on this one. No point in going over the max for the computer when you won't be able to use the extra space. Get the inclosure and the drive and use it externally.

Or you could forget the drive enclosure (those things are a pain in the neck) and just get an external hard drive. The price on them keeps getting cheaper and cheaper and they are usually pretty small and light too!

Right another good option, I haven't been keeping up on external drives and didn't know if they were getting more compact, excellent suggestion also! -
Thank you all for the info and suggestions. You guys rock!
Upgrade more than max supported drive on Gateway?
