    A friend just gave me a Compaq Presario 1685. No upgrades have ever been done on it. It has an AMD K6-2 380 MHz, 4.3g HD, 64MB SDRAM. I was wondering if i could upgrade to a 20g HD or whats the biggest HD i can upgrade to? Same for cpu, can i upgrade the cpu also?

    The CPU will be limited to a K6-2 at the highest clock speed. The hard disk space depends on its diameter. Assuming it is 2.5" with ATA interface, it could take up to 100 GB. I looked at the specifications for this laptop, and i am surprised at the quality of video (8mb ATI Rage). Not bad at all for its time.

    * Inspiron 8600c * 1.8ghz Pentium M * 128 MB Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo * 2x512 MB DDR2700 SDRAM * 60GB 7200RPM HDD *

    I have this laptop and it is good for it's time. You can upgrade the hard drive, and it would be worth it considering it is tiny by todays' standards. I haven't yet, but that is only because I don't use it for much more than wireless email around the house.

    The one major thing I did do was completely wipe the drive and put on a fresh OS. The reason I did that is because the Compaq proprietary system that is on there is a complete system bloat. By formatting and starting with a clean copy of ME (I know, I know) it took the hard drive usage down which left a lot more space in my opinion.

    Make sure your drivers are up to date and it's a good laptop.

    I had also inherited a Compaq Presario 1685. I have some questions regarding memory. I get mixed opinions regarding this. Can I install 144 pin memory exceeding 128 Mb (I'd like to install 512 Mb)? Should I purchase PC100 or PC133?

    I bought a nice clean one of these yesterday at a Flea Market, for $20, w/o a power cord. A Radio Shack employee near my workplace looked it over for me, and told me it's in great shape, but I ought to add 512 mb of memory. All I want to use it for is writing screenplays away from home and checking my email.

    He also told me Radio Shack could sell me a power cord for $79, and/or a battery for $100.

    Anyone have another take on any of this?

    Thanks
    Eric
